Australian water supply contaminated with 'human faeces'

 

Saboteurs have contaminated the water supply of an Australian town with what

is believed to be human faeces.

Scientists who tested the water discovered it contained levels of

microbiological matter 50 times higher than acceptable.

Experts say the contamination at Tennant Creek would not kill people, but it

could be dangerous to the sick, infants and the elderly.

Richard Galton, from the Power and Water Authority, said: " The counts of

microbiological matter is consistent with gross faecal contamination. "

The authority said none of the contaminated water reached households because

the intruders had apparently shut an outlet valve from the tank, reports

news.com.au.

The break-in was only discovered when staff investigated why water was not

emptying from the tank.

Mr Galton said the faeces was presumed human, but he could not estimate the

quantity required to cause the level of contamination.
