Guest guest
I was thinking of trying the Hollywood Diet Juice fast that is all the craze these days. You can buy a bottle at any GMC nutritional center. It costs about $25 a bottle and is good for two days worth. In the December 18th issue of Women's World, it gives a recipe for making it yourself much cheaper. It says not to do it for more than 2 days a month or its expremely unhealthy. It claims you will lose up to 10 pounds each time you do it as long as you don't do it more than once a month. It would be great to lose the 10 pounds but I was thinking it would be a good way to have a juice fast and still get all the vitamins and supplements I need and clean myself out and rid my body of toxins. This is the recipe: 1 cup low fat fortified vanilla soy milk 1 cup orange juice 1 cup cranberry juice 1 cup yogurt with active cultures, preferrably Stonyfield Farms brand which has the widest spectrum of " pro-biotic " bacteria 1/4 teaspoon wheatgerm oil or 2 tablespoons wheatgerm 1/4 teaspoon oil Put it all in the blender and whip it up. Sip it thoughout the day--along with plenty of water--for two days. > Does this sound like a good idea or not? I would also substitute the yoghurt and replace it with kefir if you can lay your hands on the grains so much the better but I understand that there is a commercial kefir available in the USA. To lose 10lb in 2 days is very bad for you - the quicker you lose it, the quicker you will put it back on plus another couple of lbs for your trouble. The only true way to lose weight and keep it off is to change your 'way of life'. Cut out all the 'fattening' foods and exercise 30 minutes daily - to start with that exercise need only be 30 minutes of walking - build up to the more strenuous work out when you have lost a bit of that weight and you need to 'tone' up those muscles. If you are seriously going to adjust your lifestyle to ensure that you lose weight, I suggest you take cromium piccolinate to ensure that you do not lose muscle density as well as fat - it does work, I have done it - it took me a very long time to lose 28lbs but once I started to take the cromium p, it seemed to get me to target very quickly. If you would like to send me a list of 2 or 3 days menu, I will be happy to see if there is anything you can change - please feel free to email me off list (marianne2406). Guest guest
Thanks so much Marrianne, I would have emailed you off-list but I thought it might be beneficial for someone else to see how a crazy person eats.(it's always nice to see someone who eats worse than you) I am not nor have I ever been a normal eating person. Because of this, it makes it so hard for me to come up with a sound eating plan. I was born absolutely detesting the taste of any sort of meat, fish chicken , nuts, eggs and milk. I have tried over the years to acquire a taste for some of these foods but it has only gotten worse. Try raising kids to not be picky eaters when their mother is the queen of picky. But strangely enough, my kids eat far better than I do with a much larger range of foods they like. I try to never say in front of them that I dislike a certain food. I pretend to eat everything so they will like it and at least give it a try...so far its worked. Ok here goes a typical day of eating in my universe. I wake up and usually eat a gratefruit or 2 and drink about 8 ounces of water or a Viactive drink with all my supplements and vitamins. (I know the viactive is probably not the best ingredients but it was real cheap at a close-out grocery store so I had to get it. It was on sale and I am a women.) I fix the kids breakfast of usually a four egg omelet of which they split in half. I make it with just four eggs, a tiny bit of seasalt and butter. I usually only give them water to drink and they love it....I have a huge ice cold water despenser that they have access to all day long so they don't ask for juices or (gasp) sodas. I will sometimes have a slice of toast with butter and spread it with roasted garlic that I roast with virgin olive oil. I love this but find I cannot have bread more than one slice every 3 days or I feel it badly. I may have whole wheat spagetti covered with Ragu spagetti sauce the kind flavored with meat. I know I am a vegetarian but I love the way the meat flavors the sauce (yes, I am an enigma) I also put lots of red wine in the sauce and lots of red pepper flakes...also I either put in lots of honey if I have it...if not I will (I hate to admit this) put in sugar. I drizzle the cooked spagetti with virgin olive oil then ladel on the sauce. I love this and I know it must be terrible for me. Somedays I will eat a yogurt or I will actually eat crispy bacon. (This is the only sort of meat I have ever been able to acquire a taste for and I know there is absolutely no redeeming value to it what-so-ever but I think it must be the saltiness of it that appeals to me.) If it isn't crunchy and thin and crispy then I cannot tolertate eating it either. I can totally eliminate this food with no problem. I can go years and never have it so thats not a problem to rid myself of. I have a problem getting enough protein. I don't know what to eat for this. I hate nuts. I hate eggs. I do not eat dairy very much. No milk but I do like cheese but I pay a big price if I eat it. Within an hour or so I will have terrible stomach aches from cheddar or most other hard cheeses. I do not believe cows milk is good for humans anyway. And goat cheese is just horrible most of the time. I like legumes and any sort of beans and rice. Sometimes I make brown rice with legumes and flavor it with cumin and a few indian spices or whatever I can find. Most days though, I will eat gratefruits (in the winter) or tomatoes in the summer and a grilled cheese on whole wheat or spagetti with the ragu for dinner. I drink almost exclusively water. I have gotten almost totally away from using ice. Except in the summer when it hits 110 degrees I love ice then. I like salads with just lettuce tomatoes, carrots and radishes. I like it with any sort of dressing like oil and vinegar or blue cheese or Italian. Croutons are my guilty pleasure with a salad. I make my own and they are to die for. Probably literally. If I am feeling particularly sinful I will eat a Reeses peanutbutter cup....I have all but given this up but since I am revealing all my eating habits for the past year, this is one of them. If we go out to eat, I usually eat french fries or a baked potato with the works on it. I will eat chili too but will pick out the meat. Ok there you have it. I have no idea what you can make of this but this is a typical day of my eating. I do exercise about 1 to 2 hours a day. I go to the gym and I love it. I do 20 minutes on the treadmill at aerobic level then about 45 minutes on the weight machines then the rest of the time swimming. I am quite overweight though. I weigh 209 and I am 5' 4 " . I'm 42 years old and have 3 boys ages 18 years, 5 years and 3 years. I know with the exercise and what I eat it would seem that I shouldn't be overweight but I am. I would love any help any of you can provide. I must admit that I have got better over the last couple of years and will now at least try things that I would once have looked at and said, no thanks I don't like them, without even trying. I will study your 'menu' and get back to you in a couple of days - you need to mix certain foods to get complete proteins and I hope that I will be able to find enough with your limited shopping list. I note you say you make the sauce with loads of red wine!!! How much alcohol do you consume on a weekly basis? if you use it merely for cooking that is fine - but alcohol is your worst enemy if you are trying to lose weight - 1 small wine glass per day is more than sufficient. Guest guest
Well it does just happen to be dry red wine. I would say I put about 2 cups of wine into a fairly large pot of sauce and I probably have spagetti once or twice a week. I can't seem to tolerate to many wheat products if I eat them two days in a row so I try to stager my wheat consumption to every other day or so and only have one or two portions a day when I do eat it. Like one slice of whole wheat bread and one cup of spagetti (not counting the sauce) Arizona > Except for dry red wine, that is!! Guest guest
You may have less of a problem than you think, as regards the mixing of proteins to obtain " complete " proteins. This notion, of having to mix various foods to obtain complete proteins, has been thrown into question in the past few years. It may be that we don't have to worry about this problem. I hope someone writes to this list, concerning this issue. - <marianne2406 Friday, January 04, 2002 9:22 AM Re: Hollywood Diet > In a message dated 4/1/02 17:07:44 GMT Standard Time, ArtistDesigner > writes: > > I thought I had bad eating habits but you certainly beat me (not meant as a > criticism but as you said, it is nice to see there are people worse off than > yourself) - I am also extremely picky and grateful that both of my children > take after their father in that they will eat almost anything. Guest guest
I have tried totally eliminating wheat altogether but it seems like I am addicted and do much worse when I suddenly binge on it. So by cutting back....I actually am eating it only once a week now and I feel ok. I also don't go crazy and binge because I know in just one week, I can prepare my favorite and have some of it. If I think I won't get it at all, then that seems to be all I can think about. This is a huge change for me. Less than 3 months ago, all I would eat was Pepsi, Reeses Peanut butter cups, french fries and spagetti made with regular white flour pasta, chips, dip and chocolate pudding cups (custard cremes for those in the UK). Now I only have whole wheat noodles for my pasta, I do not ever drink any sort of soda, rarely (like once every other month) do I ever have any candy and french fries don't seem to hold the appeal they once did. I am 42 and have spent a great amount of time in my life eating horrible foods so for me to change so drastically in the last few months is a huge change. I am feeling ready inside emotionally to finally change my life forever. I feel good about it and don't feel like I am depriving myself like I have in the past everytime I tried to do this. I appreciate all the help you all give here because as you all know, changing our lifestyles is hard to do if we aren't ready to commit to it. You are right about my body rebeling if I eat wheat. I am listening much closer to what my body tells me and if I would just pay attention, I think I could tailor make a diet plan that would keep me healthy and I would probably not have anymore cravings for unhealthy foods either. It took me getting a non-healing hole in my foot to deal with my sugar habit! Had I dealt with my huge sugar ntake 30 years ago, I would have had a much happier & more vital life decades ago. > You are right about my body rebeling if I eat wheat. I got a lot out of reading " The Schwarzbein Principle " . The author helped me understand why my body was going thru cravings & that helped me understand how better to deal with those cravings. In one of the comforting part of the book, Doc Shwarzbein talks of her own carbo imbalances & then reminds the reader that bad habits took years in the making & it is not feasible to try & put things back to normal in days or weeks or even months. Best of luck with your struggle! Alobar
