Guest guest
Those of you who are 40-ish, 50-ish or older, think back to your childhood... did you ever eat an entire apple or were you cautioned to never eat the core? I was thinking about laetrile treatments the other day (that's where you grind up an apricot seed to kill cancer) and remembered that my mom routinely eats the entire apple, and my dad will eat about half of the core of an apple. Both of them grew up on farms. It makes me wonder how people came up with the idea that apple cores are bad in the first place... How about potato peels? Was there ever a time when it was unheard of to peel the skin off of potatoes? Mindy, thinking this is probably off topic, but anyway.... Getting well means eating well & it is good to question the basic assumptions. I have been eating the whole apple for about 10 years now. I generally eat 1 or 2 apples a day. For breakfast I have a fruit smoothie which includes seeds of apple & pear & orange. My wife used to kid me that I was wasting the peach pits instead of chewing them up. My mom used to peel potatoes before making mashed potatoes, but I always leave the peels on. As a kid, a local grape farmer taught me to smush grapes in my mouth with my tongue to taste the sweet centers, but not chew the bitter skins, then swallow seeds & skin & the sweet centers.
