Hi Mindy,

I'm not sure of the medicinal benefits peas portray. I do know that they can

be a very good protein and carbohydrate alternative in livestock feed. A

very good veterinarian friend of mine suggested I add peas to meet my growing

horses needs instead of alfalfa, which is a rich source of protein but one

many horsemen/women believe carries risks, many of which are false.

Peas given to livestock are called " feed peas " (aka Field Peas). They

contain generous amounts of Vitamins A, C, some B's such as folic acid and

thiamin. There also high in fiber and a good source of iron. They also

contain fair amounts of calcium and magnesium (alfalfa is unbalanced in

cal/mag.). They're high in the amino acids lysine and methionine which are

crucial to horses. The general amino acid profile of the pea is considered

to be excellent supplying substantial amounts.

Though, feeding peas is not readily seen simply because there has not been a

lot of research on their nutritive value. Although I did see a study in

comparison with alfalfa that showed no difference in the growing rate when

fed peas as opposed to alfalfa!

---Mindy,

Greetings!

While flipping through the pages of my " Better Homes and Gardens "

Cookbook, I came across this useful information...

There are peas which are considered legumes. Listed were the

chickpeas, black-eyed peas, and split peas (both green and yellow).

Otherwise, they are not classified as a legume, per se. Perhaps

something to do with the processing? Just a thought.
