All depends on > the dosage...but then again, NEVER take diet pills with ephedra in them. *nod* There can be a risk of ephedra-based diet pills because it's not well monitored and difficult to predict the *actual* *amount* of alkaloids. Lab studies have shown that with some ephedra-based diet pills, the ephedra alkaloid amount varies wildly, from almost zero to the designated amount. Which is why I switched to ephedrine pills in combination with caffeine and aspirin pills - at least that way, I know exactly what amount is in my body. And it's not so much a " diet pill " as it is a " fat blaster. " If you ask a bodybuilder if he takes his ECA stack for his " diet " , he'll say " No. " But if you ask him *why* he takes ECA, he'll say that it is because he wants to burn fat without losing muscle, which is my goal, too. (Most diets, except for low-carb, will burn muscle as well as fat...which is *not* a good thing!) Incidentally, green tea is also thermogenic (fat-burning) - even the decaf kind! And now...if I haven't bored you to death already, here are a couple quotes from online medical abstracts. 1. Title: " Thermogenic, metabolic, and cardiovascular responses to ephedrine and caffeine in man. " " To develop an appropriate combination of ephedrine and caffeine consisting of clinically relevant doses, we examined the acute thermogenic, metabolic, and cardiovascular effects of different doses of caffeine © and ephedrine (E) given separately and in combination to normal subjects. The thermogenic effect after E+C (20 mg/200mg) was larger than that of any other combinations, and E and C exerted a supra-additive synergism on thermogenesis and systolic blood pressure, while being without effect on diastolic blood pressure. The combination also had pronounced effects on glucose metabolism by increasing plasma glucose, insulin and C-peptide concentrations. During chronic treatment the effect of E+C on energy expenditure is maintained, while side effects subside because tolerance develops to its hemodynamic and metabolic effects. During dietary energy restriction E+C PROMOTES FAT LOSS AND PRESERVES FAT-FREE MASS, which may contribute to its chronic effect on energy balance. In conclusion, the hemodynamic and side effects to E+C are transient during chronic treatment, while the effect on energy expenditure persists. The compound also possesses repartitioning properties, which may be useful in the treatment of obesity. " PMID: 8384179 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] (caps: Mindy) 2. Title: " The thermogenic properties of ephedrine/methylxanthine mixtures: human studies. " " The thermogenic effect of an over-the-counter preparation containing 22 mg ephedrine, 30 mg caffeine and 50 mg theophylline was investigated in human volunteers with a predisposition to obesity and also in the lean. The ephedrine/methylxanthines mixture was twice as effective as ephedrine alone in increasing the fasting metabolic rate of both subject groups, and it NORMALIZED THE REDUCED THERMOGENIC RESPONSE to a 1.25-MJ meal observed in those PREDISPOSED TO OBESITY. Measurements of 24-h energy expenditure in a respirometer indicate that the mixture had no effect on the daily metabolic rate of the lean, but was effective in causing a significant 8 percent increase in the 24-h energy expenditure of those subjects predisposed to obesity. These studies indicate that relatively mild doses of dietary methylxanthines in combination with ephedrine can raise daily energy expenditure of those predisposed to obesity, MAINLY BY CORRECTING THEIR DEFECTIVE THERMOGENIC RESPONSE TO FOOD. Such ephedrine/methylxanthine preparations could be useful as aids in the treatment of obesity. He's also had some personal experience, after correcting his juvenile diabetes and losing oh, at least 200 pounds using ECA. Mindy, no longer obese (thanks to low-carb) and no longer overweight (thanks to exercise and ECA)
