Erin is right -- ephedra's traditional use in Chinese medicine is as a

decongestant. When it started showing up in all of these diet formulas and

people had the heart attacks, etc., it is b/c it was misused. It is an herb

I would use very cautiously, and probably not as a sinle herb, but in a

balanced Chinese formula. It can raise blood pressure and heart rate. I

hadn't heard the liver thing either, but I do believe it is likely. Also, I

wouldn't put any stock in the fact that anything is perfectly safe because

it is used in a drug! This seems a rather silly statement, condiering that

nearly every drug out there is a toxin.

Even before the latest talk over ephedra, I had reservations about it. I was

thiking of using it for some extra energy. After doing a web search on it's

basic properties, I decided against it. Ephedra is a powerful stimulant and can

have harmful side effects. In this case, the reward wasn't worth the risks. As a

fan of herbs, I'll also be the first to say that " natural " doesn't always mean

" safe " . It's not a black and white thing. I still think many other herbs have

had some bad press that they don't deserve.

Ephedra or Ma Huang as it is known in chinese medicine

has a long history of use according to Chinese med.

But it is not used for energy or for weightloss. It is

consided a very powerful herb that should only be used

for a very short time. Its to main functions are for

colds and asthma. When I tell my professors about the

way it is used in energy and weightloss formulas they

cringe and think we are crazy.
