Guest guest
I am a fairly new member to this list and have been quietly lurking. I am hoping that I can find some information on a natural remedy to help my daughter. Her story is long, please bear with me. She is almost 4 years old and was born with a rare form of dwarfism complicated by severe respiratory issues. She has malacia of all of her airways and although it is classified as moderate-severe, she has been able to " get by " without a tracheotomy. However, since birth, whenever she gets a cold of any kind it always goes into a secondary pneumonia. Modern medicine wants to always treat this with heavy duty drugs, ie; steroids. Although I understand the need for the steroids at her more acute times, I am hoping to find a natural/herbal way to boost her immune system as well as support her through a bug so that we do not have to go the steroid route. I know I don't have to convince anyone here that the side effects of steroids on a little one are pretty severe. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mary Beth (near Seattle) --- mbnandrew --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.
Guest guest
I am not familiar with this disease, but have asthma. I read of some suppliments that help with that. Fish oil, for one thing, has a long term bronchial dialating effect. Have had fewer problems since I started taking that for my cancer. If you want me to look up other (asthma) things from the Life Extention book, let me know. Mary, your daughter could try Ma Huang tea. It is often sold as " dieter's tea " (but you *do* need to check the labels, because most of the time " dieter's tea " is a laxative tea and not ephedra tea). Chinese people give their newborns ma huang tea in preparation for a long life. And ephedrine is what is put into those bronchial aspirators that asthmatics use. An adult can ingest up to 90 mg of ephedrine alkaloids a day with no ill effects; not sure of the ephedra equivalent. Mindy
Guest guest
Dear Mary Beth, If your daughter has been using glucocorticoid steroids, they may be necessary, but be advised that they do not enhance the immune system but rather severely inhibit it. A nutrient that is crucial for the immune system is copper. To see how to get adequate amounts from food, see; http://members.tripod.com/~charles_W/copper3.html I have no idea what affect copper might have on your daughter's genetic problem though. Sincerely, Charles Weber

Ephedrine is made with ephedra, and if the herb was indeed toxic, the drug wouldn't have it in it. All depends on the dosage...but then again, NEVER take diet pills with ephedra in them. Guest guest
Erin, I shall try and locate the information for you regarding this herb. I do know that many diet and allergy drugs carry the substance (at least in the U.S.) Not sure where you're located at the moment.:-) Ephedra and many other over the counter drugs are linked to liver damage, including Tylenol and Advil. My sister's liver was full of cancer before she died and she ate Advil like candy for frequent headaches! Ephedra goes by many different names. Guarana is one of those used in diet pills. It is linked to high blood pressure and other major illnesses. I just know that I wouldn't risk giving it to my child. There are other herbs much more effective and less dangerous than ephedra! Guest guest
My mother pops Advils like crazy too. She should be their spokesperson. When I had a toothache, she told me advil would help, and the same with an ear ache. Geez! There's no way I could get her off the stuff, unfortunitely. Hopefully it doesnt end up hurting her liver. Guest guest
Hi Gals, There are quite a few alternative remedies for asthma. My previous post lists some little-known facts on ways one can deal with it naturally. Wishing your daughter a fast recovery, Mary Beth. Guest guest
Essential oils of Peppermint and Wintergreen are good for congestion problems. Be careful as they may burn the skin, and don't get them near your eyes. Lynn <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< <>< " He did not send us into this world to suffer. Guest guest
Greetings Andy, Perhaps someone should notify the FDA. According to this article and numerous others, Government agencies have listed Ephedra as dangerous! *S* " This herb(epedra, ma huang, guarana)is commonly used for weight control purposes and to provide an energy boost. In the past it was used as a decongestant for colds, asthma, and hay fever. " " The FDA considers it an herb of " UNDEFINED SAFETY " and has received over 400 REPORTS of ADVERSE REACTIONS, including " LIVER FAILURE " , elevated blood pressure, palpitations and strokes! It has been attributed to at least recent 15 DEATHS! " Taken from " Herbal Cures for Common Ailments " by Jim O'Brien. Medical Editor of " Your Health " . If in doubt, check it out... :-) Cheers, JoAnn JoAnn Guest joguest Friendsforhealthnaturally http://www.geocities.com/mrsjoguest/Allergies.html " andrewhallcutler " <AndyCutler@a...> wrote: > Gettingwell, " mrsjoguest " <joguest@m...> wrote: > > Erin, > > I shall try and locate the information for you regarding this > herb. > > I do know that many diet and allergy drugs carry the substance (at > > least in the U.S.) Not sure where you're located at the moment.:- ) > > Ephedra and many other over the counter drugs are linked to liver > > damage, including Tylenol and Advil. > > Ephedra has many risks, but this isn't one of them. Anyone know? Mindy
Guest guest
I am aware of what the FDA thinks. They also think you should neither be allowed to take vitamins on your own nor be permitted to have the kinds of discussions we have on this list. I don't consider them to be a credible source of any information other than the dangers of Rx drugs, and they will usually err on the side of saying those are safe when they aren't. Ephedra is an adrenergic stimulant. Like any drug, supplement, or anything else you can help yourself with, if you use it randomly or abusively enough you can hurt yourself. The death toll from aspirin is much higher. Caffeine is probably up there too. And table salt kills a LOT more people than ephedra ever will.
