Guest guest
Hello Vache and list! I thought this might be the perfect opportunity for me to introduce myself. I'm Kandi and just joined a few days ago. Like Vache, I am also a horse owner and have been feeding flax for years without toxic poisoning. Many people feed flaxseed; none of whom I am aware ever experienced a toxic effect. I feed my flax in a stabilized meal preparation, or grind it myself, but I never boil it which is said will destroy the delicate fatty acids and the purpose of supplementation with flaxseeds. While it is true that flaxseed does contain cyanogenic glycosides (linamarin) and enzymes that trigger cyanide release (prussic acid) it is not toxic to horses or humans. All plants contain certain levels of toxins that nature has given them to ward off their (plant) predators. And our bodies (including animals) natural detoxification mechanism is very capable of handling and eliminating low levels of poisons. You would have to eat large sums, building up toxins to levels the body is able to eliminate fast enough, before poisoning occurs. I hope this helps?
