I probably know a ridiculous amount about digestive enzymes now but don't want to overload you with information. I am on the enzymes and autism message board and we discuss enzymes round the clock. Most people deal with autism because of all the gut problems involved but others, like me, also use them for migraines and chronic fatigue, and others for lupus, fibro, irritable bowel diseases, digestive problems, Chron's, you name it. It is located at enzymesandautism and you can sign up for a monthly newletter if you like. The regular board gets 40+ posts a day, it is really active and productive. Karen. Guest guest
Essential oils added to enzymes seem to give them an extra boost. Do you know why that is, and if it only helps certain enzymes? I use the Peptizyde (for dairy/gluten/soy/proteins) and Zyme Prime (everything else) from www.houstonni.com. Besides the food issues, they have helped my migraines and chronic fatigue greatly.

I am on the enzymes and autism message board and we > discuss enzymes round the clock. > Karen. Hi Karen, I am very happy to find someone who knows a lot on this subject. I have a question. I have CFIDS/FM. Have had for many years. Along with that comes GI problems. I have had a CDSA from Great Smokies Lab and have severe intestinal dysbiosis and food sensitivities. My ALCAT test showed only 20 foods that I have no sensitivities to. Since I don't digest well, I have tried digestive enzymes in the past. I had " some " initial success, or relief with plant enzymes and probiotics. Unfortunately, I thought I was getting sensitive to those and stopped. Later I tried regular digestive enzymes with HCI. I thought I was actually digesting better with them for awhile too, but after three weeks of trying those, I started getting nauseous. I wasn't taking much...maybe 1 capsule...2 at the most. It didn't occur to me that was what was making me nauseous so I kept taking them...but very quickly I started actually vomiting right after a meal. I had never had this symptom before either. I stopped taking them and stopped vomiting. So, I am stuck right now. I am afraid to try any more, because I don't want to develop sensitiviy to everything. I am pretty sure I have a bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine. I am thinking maybe I dont make enough HCI. Also my tests showed pancreatic insufficiency. I am trying to have salads with many of my meals, with vinegar to help with acidity. This seems to help, but I know I am just treading water. I follow the Gottschall diet..staying away from all sugar, minimal fruit, no grains, no dairy. Mostly just meat, fish and vegetables. I also have to rotate all my food on a four day basis. I am trying to figure out whether to just stop addressing the GI problems all together for awhile, and instead try addressing the sensitivities and try to resolve that first. But what to do in the meantime with the GI tract? I have a few ideas...try veggie juicing, easier to digest. But I can't juice around the clock, I don't tolerate an all raw foods diet. I also would be trying to stay clear of fruits because of sugar and I have to rotate a limited amount of veggies, so I don't know how successful this would be. I could try to find a compromise. Or, start taking vinegar with every meal to try to keep the bacteria in check. I do think I could take probiotics...I haven't had trouble with these in the past. I also am wondering about Immunocal..whey products? Other than that, I don't know what else to try? I wonder if you have any ideas? Thanks, Jane
Guest guest
<<I am thinking maybe I don't make enough HCI...>> Here's a test that can help you determine if you have too much or too little stomach acid (Prescription for Nutritional Healing, 1997): STOMACH ACID SELF-TEST Hydrochloric acid (HCL), which is produced by glands in the stomach, is necessary for the breakdown and digestion of many foods. Insufficient amounts of HCL can lead to indigestion. HCL levels often decline with age. You can determine if you need more hydrochloric acid with this simple test. Take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. If this makes your indigestion go away, then you need more stomach acid. If it makes your symptoms worse, then you have too much acid, and you should take care not to take any supplements that contain HCL. <<I am pretty sure I have a bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine...I do think I could take probiotics...I haven't had trouble with these in the past.>> Do you mean candida overgrowth of the small intestine? Its important to prevent such overgrowths to reduce the toxic burden they produce, improve digestion and absorption, and fend off from leaky gut. More bacteria, in the form of probiotics, is usually helpful. << Also my tests showed pancreatic insufficiency.>> Pancreatin supplements may be helpful. Are insulin and glucagon levels normal? I have tried that test and my symptoms definitely improved, but as my previous post mentioned...I have tried supplementing with enzymes and probiotics and HCI, but I can't tolerate them. That is the reason I was looking for other ideas. I am not sure whether my insulin and glucagon are normal. The last time I had a CBC my glucose was normal, but I don't think those tests are routine.
