Thanks for the reminder.

Some of us have been there before and it is a hard lesson to learn.

Best wishes for a happy new year.

Sorry about that. I was mislead by someone on the identity of the problem.

Not really in my specialty. I agree with David that these system contagions,

while not technically viruses, are still worth taking seriously.

Unfortunately, the list in this instance did not remove the attachment. It

was sent with the message. Fortunately, our Norton AV for Exchange

automatically removed it from the message.

The Happy99 Worm programme is a worm, or Trojan horse. It is not benign

because it compromises your system by altering the WSock32.Dll, which

handles Internet connectivity. I would not say that a programme that

attaches itself to an E-Mail and is sent to all people in your address book

has no effect. Everyone should be running an Anit-Virus programme that

automatically detects and removes such programmes before they can effect

your system.

Just to fuel the fire....I received no attachment, and no virus. My

anti-virus program will automatically alert me to a virus (and has in the

past). Just to be on the safe side, I updated and rescanned...nothing. For

some reason it must have gotten to David...but not to me.

I got an email with Happy99.exe attached to it. A quick delete and hey

presto, it's gone. But Umar, you might want to check your computer and get

rid of it. It's a pain.

It is not the Melissa Virus; it is not a virus at all. It is the Happy

99.exe Worm program, and has a much more benign effect, if at all. What

it does is attach to your emails and send itself to everyone in your

address book (that is if you open the exe file, which you can't through

this list, since it removes all attachments).

Don't panic; visit one of the online sites dedicated to antivirus

software and they will tell you how to purge the worm from your system

if you are afraid it is in there.

While I agree with you that everyone should be running anti-virus

software, I also know that the harmful part of this worm, the

happy99.exe, was removed and/or encoded by the program which deletes

attachments from my list.

We have had mass panic over this trojan program before. It is very

simple to remedy and an incident like this does not require hysteria,

only a bit of education and caution.

Thank You,

Caroline Abreu

Just in case - be careful!

This looks like a bad one that's coming. Forward

this to others. Please read and forward to everyone

you know......

DO NOT OPEN " NEW PICTURES OF FAMILY "

It is a virus that will erase your whole " C " drive.

It will come to you in the form of a E-mail from a

familiar person. I repeat a friend sent it to me, but

called & warned me before I opened it. He was not so

lucky and now he can't even start his computer!

Forward this to everyone in your address book. I

would rather receive this 25 times than not at all.

Also, Intel announced that a new very destructive

virus was discovered recently. If you receive an

email called " FAMILY PICTURES, " do not open it. Delete

it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link

libraries(.dll files) from your computer. Your

computer will not be able to boot up.

PASS THIS ON TO ANYONE YOU HAVE AN E-MAIL ADDRESS

FOR.

If you receive an email titled: " It Takes Guts to

Say Jesus " DO NOT OPEN IT. It will erase everything on

your hard drive.

This information was announced yesterday morning from

IBM; AOL states that this is a very dangerous virus,

much worse than " Melissa, " and that there is No Remedy

for it at this time. Some very sick individual has

succeeded in using the reformat function from Norton

Utilities causing it to completely erase all

documents on the hard drive. It has been designed to

work with Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet

Explorer. It destroys Macintosh and IBM comnpatible

computers. This is a new, very malicious virus and

not many people know about it.-
