Guest guest
Holy cow, 245 calories in a quarter cup of flax seeds! No wonder I am getting fat. Geez, there is literally a 50# sack of flax seeds next to my computer out here in the barn that I dip into with my hand & eat the stuff like candy. I personally eat more flax seed in a day than all 27 horses in the barn combined. And what's his name implied I can't eat the almonds anymore for they have arsenic. Wonder what the deal is with my raw sunflower seeds? Shall I die from them too? Someone else is trying to scare me of kombucha. Any votes against kefir??? Perhaps the next time I see one of the cats playing with a mouse in the barn I will take it away from them & eat it! After all, I hear they are high in Taurine. <grin> Vache
Guest guest
<<I personally eat more flax seed in a day than all 27 horses in the barn combined.>> Q: " What's wrong with supplementing my diet with flaxseed oil? " A: " A central theme in the zone is the reduction of arachidonic acid levels by diet. Controlling insulin is your most powerful tool, but the addition of omega-3 fatty acids can also have a significant benefit. Flaxseed oil is rich in alpha linolenic acid (ALA), which is an omega-3 fatty acid and therefore has some use in controlling arachidonic acid production. But if you are going to supplement with an omega-3 oil, then I recommend fish oil, which is rich in the best omega-3 fatty acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). EPA has a tenfold greater impact on reducing the production of bad eicosanoids than does ALA on a gram-for-gram basis. Another reason I prefer fish oil over flaxseed oil is that the excess consumption of ALA in flaxseed oil tends to reduce the production of gamma linolenic acid (GLA), the building block of good eicosanoids. What's excess? Anything more than one tablespoon per day. Finally, the vast body of research data on the clinical benefits of EPA is overwhelming. Therefore, supplementation with EPA as opposed to ALA will have a far greater impact in getting you into the Zone. But before you add any omega-3 fatty acid supplements to your diet, try to get those fatty acids from food itself. The best source of EPA? Salmon. Of course, you could do what your grandmother did in her day to ensure adequate levels of EPA, and take cod liver oil. Guest guest
Well Rob, since as you pointed out I am doing it all wrong by eating flax seed like candy, I'll have all know that instead today I ate 2 packages of Reece's Peanut Butter Cups, some Sam's Club cola, then some cheap brand of pretzels. Hmm, wonder which I am more likely to die from, the flax seed or the other garbage? Geez, there is just no getting around all this you are doing it wrong syndrome on this list is there? BTW, as a person with an incredibly strong maritime background, with a solid base in the commercial fisheries want me to tell you about farm raised salmon??? Poor little fishies swimming around in cramped filthy pens with open sores upon their bodies having to eat very unhealthy commercial feeds laced with chemicals & hormones. Gee, sounds rather like cows & chickens, eh. I can speak coherently upon slaughter cows too. <grin> I used to help buy cows for the slaughter market for a meat packer. Snails, maybe I'll just stick to snails. Really they're not so bad if one uses enough butter & garlic. <smirk> Vache
Guest guest
Hi Vache! I'm assuming you mean flaxmeal not flaxseed. Flaxmeal is an excellent source of fiber. Along with omega-3 fat, flaxmeal contains cancer-opposing compounds called lignans, which work to deactivate the more cell-stimulating forms of estrogen. Helps make the symptoms of PMS milder. Guest guest
Nope, I mean a 50# sack of flax seed from the feed store. Most likely it has been sprayed, though I did read the certifying label that was attached to it. Who knows what lies they tell. *sigh* It is for the horses. My computer is in the barn. Call me lazy, but all I have to do is drop my arm from this chair & my hand is in the bag. Easier than getting up & walking to the fridge in the tack room where I'd have to sort past the organic yogurt for the dog... Vache
