Canola can in no way compare to olive oil, which has been used in diet for thousands of years. Canola is a hybridized version of rapeseed that was developed by Canadian scientists. They specifically were trying to reduce naturally occuring poisons in rapeseed oil, erucic oil being the worst. Rapeseed oil is illegal for consumption in the US because it contains poisons that cause liver damage, heart damage infertility, and a host of other problems in many animals. In fact, rapeseed and canola are both limited in animal feed. The FDA allowed the new name Canola (from " Canadian Oil " ) in the 1980's. Below is a quote from the FDA paper to legalize the sale of canola in the US (from http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/ANSWERS/ANS00198.html) " FDA is proposing to allow an edible oil extracted from rapeseed to be called canola oil. The proposal, published in the Federal Register on Sept. 16, would recognize canola oil as an alternate common or usual name for low erucic acid rapeseed oil (LEAR oil), as it is identified in the United States. " With the obsession of saturated oils of the last couple of decades (which is starting to abate because heart health has not improved as predicted), looking at just saturated oil content has incorrectly convinced people that canola is healthier than olive oil. The enormous canola oil lobby does not push the fact that it also has naturally occurring poisons that are regulated by law, and they also do not point out that the oil is usually extremely processed, and much is genetically engineered. Tales of it hurting people are starting to appear. So, this very cheap oil is finally being asked to stand on its own, not just on its relative saturated oil profile. A scan of the papers on PubMed show NO toxicity or problems at this level. The latest version of the seed has reduced erucic even further. Many foods have been modified by food scientists over the years to reduce undesirable elements naturally occurring. You eat many of there foods every day, so why give the original rapeseed a bad rap a it is NOT what current Canola is made from. With respect, please try to compare apples to apples. ======================== Good Health & Long Life, Greg Watson, gowatson USDA database (food breakdown) http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/ PubMed (research papers) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi DWIDP (nutrient analysis) http://www.walford.com/dwdemo/dw2b63demo.exe KIM (omega analysis) http://ods.od.nih.gov/eicosanoids/KIM_Install.exe
