Cod liver oil is LOADED wth EPA & DHA. It tastes

awful but it's worth it (it MUCH more economical than

the fish oil caps).

Try Carlson's Cod Liver Oil. It is made with Lemon and tastes good, at least

to me it does : )

Hi Pam,

With respect, the Vit A level is too high and the EPA & DHA levels are too low.

Don't forget to take 500 IUs Vit E as well.

Thanks, Ken! That's the brand I asked for at the HFS

I went to. They didn't have that brand so I bought

Twin Labs' Dale Alexanders' Cod Liver Oil Cherry

Flavored. Thought the cherry flavoring would

help...IT DIDN'T!!!

How much do you take a day, hon?

Hi Greg,

I don't know what cod liver oil you're talking about.

Twin Labs' Cod Liver Oil has 552 mgs of EPA and 500

mgs of DHA per teaspoon (with 4600 IUs of vitamin A

and 460 IUs of vitamin D). Too low??? You have to

take 3 fish oil capsules (and that is if you get a

good high-potency brand) to get the same amount of EPA

and DHA. And those amounts of vit A & D are not too

high. Most vit A supplements have 10,000 IUs. Since

taking cod liver oil, I don't have to supplement with

vit A. So, you can really see the economics of taking

cod liver oil.

Yes, I take Vit E as well.

Hope this helps,

Hi Pam,

1 teaspoon is about 5 g of the oil, so to compare apples to apples 1g of fish

oil is 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA.

Therefore 5 g would be 900 mg EPA and 600 mg DHA.

I prefer to get my Vits from veggies.

Anyway 1 teaspoon of your cod liver oil is too much EPA + DHA. The recommended

dose is 600 mg EPA + DHA which is what

you get from 2 standard fish oil capsules.

Just be sure you are limiting Omega 6 LA to less than 7 g.

I have been taking about 1 tsp a day, and then I take some flaxseed oil too.

I do eat a fair amount of fatty fish along the way. We had a very nice

poached salmon tonight.

On a side note, once I started giving our three children EPA and DHA, their

attention span at school went way up. I know since we homeschool : )

I did just read in the Omega Plan tonight that Cod Liver Oil sends you over

the Vit A and D requirements if you take enough, so I may relook that.

This is inaccurate information, Greg. Like I said in

my email, the cod liver oil has 552 mgs of EPA and 500

mgs per teaspoon (5 g) NOT 900/EPA and 600/DHA.

Like so many supplements, recommendations vary

drastically. I have never heard of the recommended

dose of both the omegas being 600 mg. I usually see

1,500 mgs (combined mgs of EPA & DHA). And of course

therapeutic does are much higher.

You took my example the wrong way around. I should have been clearer. Sorry.

The figures I gave were for 1 teaspoon

of fish oil so as to compare with 1 teapsoon of cod liver oil.

Gram for gram, there is more EPA and DHA in fish oil than cod liver oil.

Hi Pam,

Here are the current non commercial recommendations from a US expert working

committee:

=====================

Polyunsaturated fatty acids in the food chain in the United States

http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/71/1/179

MEETING DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR n-3 FATTY ACIDS

To date, no official dietary recommendations have been made for n-3 fatty acids

in the United States.

Recommendations for total PUFA intake, however, have been made: 1-2% of energy

from linoleic acid is required to prevent

a fatty acid deficiency and total PUFA intake should remain at 7% of energy and

not exceed 10% of energy.

Although no formal recommendation for n-3 fatty acid intake has been made in the

United States, a group of nutrition

scientists has recently provided guidelines for specific recommendations for

ALA, EPA, and DHA.

This group suggests that intake of ALA be 2.2 g/d and that of EPA and DHA

combined be 0.65 g/d.

In addition, this group recommends an upper limit of 6.7 g linoleic acid/d.

==================

So the recommendations are:

Omega 6 LA < 7 g

Omega 3 LNA ~ 2.2 g

Omega 3 EPA + DHA ~ 0.65 g

Hi All

I have taken about 3 tablespoons of cod liver oil per day

for a couple of months with no apparent side effects.

Basically cod liver oil is a food and i can not believe you

will overdose on a food.

Also just got my EFA test back from GSDL - the test is

quite impressive - my omega 3s are just getting back into a

normal range. DHA is slow to evolve from EPA so i will keep

on going till my DHA is off scale high to see what will happen.

Greg, lets agree to disagree about 'recommendations'

of Omega-3s. ;-) My point was that cod liver oil is

more economical than fish oil CAPSULES not fish oil.

Comparing the EPA and DHA of fish oil to cod liver oil

is irrelevant .

Hi Rick,

What brand of cod liver oil do you take? Do you take

it by itself (YUCK!) or mix it with something.

Thanks for this information,

Hi Rick,

I would appreciate it if you would let me see your results. I have a Excel

spreadsheet which has many data sets to

which I would like to add yours.

I maybe able to suggest dietary changes to improve your data further.

Hi Pam,

If cod liver oil is your oil of choice, so be it. Just understand EPA & DHA are

powerful fatty acids and you can

overdose or get into problems if you take too much of any Omega.

Suggest you run your diet through the NI Omega balancing KIM software. You will

probably be surprised at your results.

True, Greg, like just about everything else! How

come you didn't warn Rick? ;-) He's taking much more

than I ever would dream of taking lol!

Hi Rick,

With respect cod liver is a concentrated product. There is no way you could get

this in nature.

Sort of like carbs. The more processed and concentrated they are, the more the

body has problems handling them.

Be very aware that you can get too much EPA & DHA.

I do strongly suggest you observe the USA working committee recommendations on

Omegas unless your doctor is treating a

specific disease. High and higher levels of EPA and DHA may depress needed

inflammatory reactions. Like your stomach

cells not reacting to being eaten by stomach acid, producing not enough

bicarbonate to buffer the acid and turning into

a ulcer. Aspirin and other NSAIDs do this. They work just like EPA does and

damps down the Omega 6 AA derived

eicosanoids.

Take care,

Greg

Ok Greg

Here are the numbers:

ALA 18:3 w3 = .33

Gondoic 20:1 w9 = 0.23

Nervonic 24:1 w9 = 4

Lauric C12:0 = 0.1 this is after taking lots of coconut oil -

quite disappointing!

I will add cetyl myristoleate which is another key to

EFA balance of severe diseases..

Hi Rick!

Luckily, I don't have the sugar demon any more ;-)!!!

Actually, it's not the taste of sugar that ppl are

drawn to, it's the chemical *release* they get from

sugar. Oh, I get so much from the cod liver oil that

I wouldn't give it up for anything.

Thanks, Rick, for your input,
