I am cross posting this from another List & no it is not a Green

Peace List. I don't know if they even have a List. LOL.

I prefer to take a different approach to TJ's marketing of GE foods. I

encourage them to carry " organic " foods, rather than discouraging them from

carrying GE foods.

The anti-GE foods movement also has the advantage, that any company that

wishes to sell its food product, understands that labelling their product

" organic " or " non-GE " is a selling point; it's more likely to " sell " the

product.

Unfortunately, it's not true that people invariably reject GE foods, once

they're informed. Many people are simply impervious to appeals to their

common sense, or their concern for their health, etc. Others simply refuse

to pay the often much higher prices they have to pay for " organic " foods.

Still others, may listen to arguments against GE manipulations of our foods,

but remain unconvinced, or unwilling to think about the issue, or unwilling

to look carefully enough to be won over. These are bottom-line realities

that affect TJ's merchandising choices.

I believe that many companies will often give you what you want (organic,

non-GE, etc.), but not stop offering what you don't want, because many other

people " do " want what you don't want. The food business is highly

competitive and operates on a small profit margin. You can't expect sudden

changes in the way many of these outfits do business, under these economic

circumstances. It's not always possible for TJ's to compete successfully

against their competitors, if they don't have the lowest possible prices;

and forcing the company to restrict itself to non-GE products may threaten

their survival, by narrrowing their wholesale options, and forcing them to

charge higher prices.

Let's encourage them to offer products we will buy. I'm much more concerned

about our having access to foods we're willing to eat at TJ's than I am in

forcing their hand on GE foods.
