Thyroid Goitres

Hi,

I am new to the list and have been lurking until I saw your post. I had my

thyroid removed. I had nodules on my thyroid and I was told that it is

common that they are Benin. However after a needle biopsy 6 months later,

it turned out to be cancer. I now facilitate a thyroid cancer support group

in NYC Manhattan at Beth Israel Hospital.

Has she had ultrasound? Biopsy? Nuclear medicine? Can you find out her TSH

levels? Hard to give you any info with no stats. Kim

Hi everyone,

My sister has goitres (or cysts) on her thyroid. She has had all the symptoms of

thyroid problems too i.e./ feeling tired, unable to lose weight yet exercising

etc.

She has seen a specialist and he wants to take these goitres out but it means

taking out her thyroid. Naturally, my sister thinks this is a bit drastic and

has delayed any idea of an operation for six months so she can find out if

there's a way of making her thyroid function better and to get rid of the

goitres w/out an operation.

I would like to know if anyone on the list has had the experience of having

their thyroid removed or has found something that worked for them and got rid of

any goitres they may have had. Of course, my sister is going to do some research

of her own, but I thought it was worth asking the list, on the chance that

someone has some ideas!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Rebecca

Have you studied EFAs?? Go to a search engine type in EFA + thyroid

you'll get pages like this which will talk about the myriad of controls EFAs

have

Yes I have studied EFA's. I'm dubious of any website like the one below that

claims that EFA's can do all these things when they are obviously selling

something - need to see the bona fide research first - my sister would too

and no doubt she'll find it! (grin!) She's the lawyer in the family.....

Hi Kim,

My sister had all the 'regular' thyroid tests (for TSH levels) and they came

back normal YET she has had all the symptoms of thyroid problems and then

the goitres.

The lumps aren't cancerous. She had a needle biopsy done sometime ago. But

the lumps are large enough to push against her windpipe.

Therefore no nuclear medicine.

I hope this is the information you needed.

Hi Again

I agree that sites that sell something appear dubious.

However if you study EFAs thoroughly you will discover that EFAs

do FAR MORE things than anyone can believe.

These two sites don't sell anything:

http://www.chiro.org/places/ABSTRACTS/Life_in_the_Balance.html

http://www.price-pottenger.org/Articles/Prostaglandin.html

This site sells a test for EFA balance which would be extremely valuable!

http://www.gsdl.com/assessments/fattyacids/appguide/index.html

these 5 pages have a good outline of the effects of EFAs on metabolism

but even these are not the complete story of the scope of controls they have.

And believe it or not = to reverse the disease (which is just a symptom in

itself)

just reverse the cause - rebalance the EFAs - normalize the cells and the

symptom will go away!

Kelp is teh only thing I can think of at the moment.

Take double what it says on the bottle it can not hurt

her. It has natural Iodine in it and that is all some

thyroids need. Yes I had half of my thyroid out, one

side was the size of a goose egg.

Hi Kim,

My sister had her thyroid gland removed because of a goiter as it too, was

very enlarged. She is on Synthroid now and will be the rest of her life.

My other sister had her thyroid taken care of with the radioactive iodine

and that worked for her. I've just been underactive and on Synthroid these

past 28 years. As far as TSH levels are concerned it is not that unusual

for them to come back " normal " yet still be experiencing symptoms. A more

definitive test would be Free T-4 and Free T-3. Also, every doctor reads

the thyroid tests differently, in other words, one who would look at the

results would say your level is too high, another doctor can come along

looking at the same results and say it is too low. If you are tested and

told your results are normal, yet you are experiencing symptoms, then i'd

say your doctor is one of those who tends to feel high numbers in the test

results is " normal " ... A very good website on Thyroid problems is at About

com Thyroid: http://thyroid.about.com/ Hope this helps...

Hi again,

Yes I've studied EFA's pretty well thank you. My late son had a problem with

EFA's so I learned a lot about them: enough to know THAT IT ISN'T the ONLY

'cure' around. I think it's dangerous to claim that to reverse the balance

of EFA's you will 'reverse' the symptoms of a condition and it will all go

away.....

Just my two cents worth.

BTW: If you wanted to get your EFA's checked: I live in New Zealand we can

get the test done for FREE in our public health system. Amazing I know as

our health service is on shaky ground these days.....

Cheers,

There is a protocol for removing a thyroid gland. 3 inclusive biopsy and or

growth the nodules. If her thyroid continues to grow she will need to have

it removed or have Radioactive Iodine to shrink the gland. In the meantime

you can find out what you can do the help make the gland work efficiently so

these radical choice may not have to come in to play. I also have heard Kelp

is good. I believe there are other nutrients to help thyroid function,

however I am not familiar with them as of yet. There is also a different tsh

test to have a better understanding how the gland is working. I will try and

look into this for you. I also included a site with a ton of info of the

thyroid gland and how the medical community deals with these problems. In my

case there was not alternative medicine that could help me and I depend on

traditional medicine to deal with the cancer. This kind of cancer does not

respond to alternative choices. At least I am not aware of any as of yet. <A

Hi there,

We have found licorice useful in eliminating thyoid problems...i.e. the

natural licorice found in healthfood stores.

Also Iodized sea salt is helpful for the thyroid.Iodine contributes to

glandular health

Kelp is good for most glandular problems. It can be found in supplement form and

in Eden soymilks. These things are very helpful and essentially heal the problem

from the inside out, unlike many drugs that are on the market.

Hi there,

I've heard that kelp and licorice are beneficial in restoring proper

thyroid function! There's a lot of advice in Michael Murray's books about

alternative thyroid therapies. He is tops for alternative advice!!!
