Guest guest
Hi all- I have a question regarding old carpet in our home. We live in a rental home and the carpet has never been replaced- it is close to 16 yrs old. The carpet is stained, " flattened " or matted from wear. We have had it cleaned and yet it is still stained and awful. My question is this: could this be the root of many of our colds/flus/asthma probs? All 4 of us only have these symptoms while at home. My dh is always coughing up phlegm ( but only at home), I have a sore throat every day when I am home, the kids only have runny noses while home, etc... Any ideas? Otherwise we have a good home. Guest guest
That old carpet is breaking down into what it was made from and so much of this dust is getting in the air it make them cough and get flem. I had the same problem with with an old foam mattress we had i had to replace it no amount of cleaning would help. Peg Find a job, post your resume. http://careers. Guest guest
Sindea, Yes, your carpet can definitely contribute to your health problems. Where do you live? Do you live in a humid climate? Here in the Philippines we have mostly tile floors, but also a large oriental carpet in the middle of our floor. During heavy rains, like the typhoon that passed through here this week, the carpet gets wet from the humidity in the air, and smells terrible. There is undoubtedly molds growing in it. During those times we roll it up and get it out of the way until we can dry it in the hot sun and kill all the molds. I told my wife yesterday we just get rid of it because it is such a health hazard. But if you live in a rental unit, I don't really know what your options are... Guest guest
I thought ANY carpets were a no-no for anybody with allergies or sensitivities?? I've been much healthier since I got rid of all my rugs.......no amount of cleaning can get out the stuff that gets stuck in them.....go to plain wood floors. Guest guest
Thanks all! Brian- we are in the Seattle area, so we are pretty humid, but not bad. Our lame landlord recently admitted that he did not change the carpet when we moved in over 3.5 yrs ago was because we had a child. Well, he says he would replace it if WE paid for it- which should not be our responsibility! I am wondering if we do a really deep clean on it would it help even a tiny bit? Once we can afford our own home it will not have carpetting!
