Guest guest
Chocolate bar danger to consumers Chocolate bar danger to consumers by Rachel Hancock 15jul01 Children and pregnant women are among a group of consumers warned against a new chocolate bar available on supermarket shelves. The Cadbury Viking bar (above) contains guarana, a natural source of caffeine which can cause insomnia, anxiety and has been linked to heart disease. A fine-print warning, under the flap of the wrapper, says the product is not recommended for " children under 15 years, diabetics, pregnant women, nursing mothers or persons sensitive to caffeine " and " should only be used under medical or dietetic supervision " . But Australian Democrats state Leader Mike Elliott, a long-time campaigner against energy drinks - which also contain guarana - said the labelling did not go far enough. He has asked the Federal Government to open an investigation. " You would not know it had caffeine in it unless you lift the wrapper, " he said. " What are you doing putting chocolate bars on the shelves without clear warnings? " Mr Elliott said most people did not realise energy drinks, and now chocolate bars, contained caffeine because guarana was marketed as a " natural energy fix " . His comments come in the wake of news that top-selling energy drink Red Bull is being investigated over fears it may have been linked to three deaths in Sweden. " We don't know the substance of those deaths but the important point is people have to be fully aware that there's a lot more caffeine being offered in their diets, " Mr Elliott said. The Australian and New Zealand Food Authority is expected to soon hand down recommendations to state ministers for strict labelling of products containing caffeine and a recommended consumption maximum. But a spokeswoman said the ANZFA would delay its final recommendations until the full extent of the Swedish inquiry was known. " It's not illegal to add guarana to chocolate bars, but we are currently looking at guarana and the caffeine content of food as a whole, " she said. Dietitian and Flinders University lecturer, Dr Anthea Magarey, said not enough was known about guarana and questioned its addition to chocolate bars. " This product certainly contains quite high levels of caffeine and we would not be supporting that for children, " she said. A Cadbury spokesperson said the company was under no obligation to provide the recommendation, but felt a responsibility " even though (the caffeine content) is less than a cup of coffee " . http://www.theadvertiser.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,2347725% 255E91 1,00.html --- End forwarded message ---

Hi Elaine, If they used Caffeine on the wrapper, instead of Guarana, I suspect their sales would be not too good. You would be surprised at how many folks don't know Guarana is just caffeine in another form. Greg

I had no idea that caffeine was also liked to heart disease. I think the whole thing is that they are hiding the warning label, inside the front cover in the back.
