Guest guest
SUGAR INTOLERANCE MAY CAUSE DIGESTIVE SYMPTOMS Also at the ACG annual meeting, doctors from the University of Iowa reported that fructose, a sugar found in honey and many fruits, may be the culprit behind gastrointestinal symptoms that have no other apparent cause. Young K. Choi, M.D., and his colleagues suggest that fructose intolerance could explain some of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, a disorder that afflicts about 10 percent of Americans and is the leading reason for referring people to a gastroenterologist. In a study of 219 people with unexplained gas, bloating, and abdominal pain, the investigators found that 78 percent of them had evidence of abnormal digestion of fructose. Eighty-two percent of the patients met the criteria for IBS. Lactose intolerance, or the inability to digest milk sugar, is common, but fructose intolerance has yet to be studied widely, Dr. Choi says. Until it is, he suggested that a diet low in fructose might provide symptomatic relief for some people with IBS.
Guest guest
Dear Group, I think these researchers are missing the point. The reason that most have problems digesting sugars is because of an imbalance of proper bacteria in the intestines. To restrict diet is good to relieve symptoms but to cure the root cause usually requires to rebalance and normalize the intestinal tract in order to rebuild it with nutritional help. Guest guest
Makes sense if you look at the fact that candida has been found to be involved in quite a lot of cases of IBS - sugar feeds the candida - which causes bloating and irritation. But the medical people don't want to go there. Guest guest
Dear Nick, Yes, candida a. is a possibility, but there are many other possible pathogenic bugs can harm you also. The " bad " guys are normally held in check by the " good " guys. Thats why medicines to attack the bad ones only work as long as you are taking it. When you stop they grow back. We might use an agent to reduce the load of bad ones in the intestines and then, to fortify the intestines with more good bacteria in large doses. Most probiotic capsuls are too small a dose to be really effective. I believe in homemade kefir and kombucha tea to turn the tide replentishing good ones. The homemade ones are very different from the cultured kefir from the stores. good luck, Frank Gettingwell, " Nick Grant " <nwgrant@i...> wrote: > Makes sense if you look at the fact that candida has been found to be > involved in quite a lot of cases of IBS - sugar feeds the candida - which > causes bloating and irritation. Guest guest
I have a daughter who has not been able to tolerate sugar since she was born. She gets cold sores on her mouth when she eats anything with sugar in it. Peg --- califpacific wrote: > Dear Group, > I think these researchers are missing the point. Guest guest
....I thought my son was the only one. With him it is not sugar, but acid...all fruits, especially oranges give him cold sores...poor kid, every photo up until we started him on CS, has him with a cold sore around his mouth. It took us a long time to work out it was fruit that gave them to him. Its nice to know of someone else...what age did it start to happen? Matthew was about 2 years old. Tracy NOT NICK.... he is my hubby. - " P Mahan " <bogduck Friday, 9 November 2001 15:32 Re: Re: Sugar Intolerance > I have a daughter who has not been able to tolerate > sugar since she was born.
