Guest guest
Hello Janet, I hope you don't mind my writing to you. When I saw that you are from Vancouver, my eyes lit up with joy. I have a Cousin who lives on Victoria Island and I was privileged to visit with her about 4 years ago. My daughter won a trip to Las Vegas and my husband allowed me to go as well and then we did a very small amount of travelling, Los Angeles (Disneyland), San Francisco, San Diego and a day and a half in Vancouver. What a beautiful place you live in. I had not seen my cousin for over 40 years and it was wonderful to see her again. I live in Australia in a suburb of Adelaide which is in South Australia. I am 58 and have a husband, 4 grown children and 5 grandchildren. I became interested in Aromatherapy earlier this year. A local community house was holding classes and I went along from curiosity really, but I found I enjoy it very much. We do a few excercises and then work in pairs and give each other a foot massage and maybe neck, shoulder or hand massage as well. Of course we are limited in what we can do as there is not much privacy and no massage tables. I am also a shy person and thought perhaps we could communicate with each other if you would like to do so. I have not posted much yet as my knowledge is fairly limited at this time but I hope to learn much more. I also found a lady from this newsgroup who amazingly lives 2 minutes from my home!! We have met and had a coffee together once, and are going to meet again next week. Best Wishes to you and your family for the coming Christmas Season. Hope to hear from you, Margaret Morphett (Australia) >Hi Everyone: > >My name is Janet and I am from Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada. I have been interested in alternative medicines for many years but am just now trying to learn more about aromatherapy. I am sorry, but I am quite shy and might stay in the background for awhile. Thank you.

Guest guest
Hi Maggie There are so many oils but I find that for a relaxing atmosphere in the home that Geranium & Bergamot are two of my favourites, as for stimulating & creative I like Grapefruit, Lime, Rosemary and from time to time Basil as long as the Basil is used sparingly as it has quite a strong aroma and can be " overpowering " if used too often and too much. regards Moira du Toit Jhb S.A. .. Guest guest
Bobbi, Hi, Reiki is a hands on healing technique that you take classes on, like one weekend for Reiki 1, then another day for Reiki 2. After that is a masters in Reike (another day. usually has to be a year later) and with that you can teach. Reiki can only be taught in a class, because that is where you receive the attunments (blessings) and learn the symbols that assist in Reiki. Yes it can be spelled Reike also. It is said the first one to do Reike is Jesus, and a Monk who was teaching at a boys christian school got visions of this and the symbols while medatating in the mountains of Japan I believe. It started from there and spread its way into Hawaii and over to America. The reason California is so hip on all these eastern techniques is it is the first state to get the info!! Lucky them. Reike can be done to others, yourself, your dog, your plant, your house! has Reike groups also. Guest guest
Hi there So sorry to hear such sad news about your dog. I think you are on right track so with Pine , Teatree and Lavender. Some other oils for the immune system are eucalyptus & rosemary. Im not too sure how you would apply it to a long haired dog but one of Julia Lawless books suggests (for humans) a quite concentrated massage blend using a carrier oil and to massage into the palms of hands and soles of feet once a day. Perhaps you could do the same on his paws. I think that dogs paws are quite absorbent (for want of a better word). I dont know what dilution you would use though. Perhaps someone else could help out here? Im not sure if you would go on the weight of the dog and perhaps use the same dilution you would give a small child? Maybe someone else can give some suggestions? Lawless also suggests to use one of the immune syustem boosting oils as a room fragrancer on an everyday basis, perhaps put a drop or two on his blanket or where he sleeps.? Let us know how you progress. Moira South Africa - <a.giacon Saturday, June 09, 2001 11:51 AM [AX] new member > Hi there all. > I am an Aromatherapist . Guest guest
Regarding essential oils and herbal treatments for our four legged friends, I would like to recommend you read the works of Juliette de Bairacli Levy : a world renowned herbalist, author, breeder of Afghan hounds, friend of the Gypsies, traveler in search of herbal wisdom, and the pioneer of holistic veterinary medicine. I recently watched a documentary on PBS about Juliette de Bairacli Levy and it was life changing for me. She is the most remarkable woman, a true wise one among us. Guest guest
Hi everyone. I am Marlena... mother or three (8, 6, 4). I've struggled emotionally since I was nine years old. In my late teen years, I caught everything I was exposed to including mono and oral herpies. I'd never even kissed anyone!!! It's as if I were a germ magnet...lol. From the time I was 9years old until 20years old, I struggled with an eating disorder called bulimia. I found the more I studied about nutrition, the better I could feel about the good things that I was putting into my body and eventually with much willpower and backslides, overcame it. In my puberty years, I struggled with suicidal thoughts and temptations. That didn't finally go away until I took my first antidepressant at age 24. My tonsils were taken out when I was 20 because of chronic sore throats and upper respiratory infections. I was in nursing school at the time and worked in the ER catching everything that walked through the doors. I had a nervous breakdown my last semester of Nursing school. I couldn't sleep, had night terrors, threw up everything I ate (not on purpose), was violent against myself, couldn't keep thoughts in my brain, had hallucinations, and was terrified to be alone. I went in the hopital, slept for 7 days straight with the help of medicaitons, took a leave of absense from nursing school (and never retuned), and seemed to be ok when I was released. It was all attributed to the extreem amount of stress I was under from nursing school and my friend's recent death from AIDS. Nothing was ever said about my diet of boxed macaroni and cheese and potatoes, because that was all I could afford and pay my tuition too. A few years later I married, and began having episodes of amnesia. (again, money was tight and good food was scarce) They wouldn't last long.. a few minutes. Just enough to scare me and let me know that something was very wrong. This time I was diagnosed with severe depression, and put of antidepressents. Everytime my husband left me alone to visit friends or run errands, I would develop an uncontrollable urge to break everything in the house. I would be so sure that I would be fine if he left, and then when he actually would leave for a few hours, I would have to go outside to keep from destroying everything we owned. I was raped and became pregnant with my first child. I went off all medications and quit my job to help my mother die of colon cancer. The thing that amazed me was that during that time, I actually felt emotionally stable. After my daughter was born, I went into a deep depression again. I quit breast feeding so that I could go on antidepressents again. My husband and I seperated, and I seemed to be doing fine. I was studying accounting and doing well. I lived with friends. I bonded with my daughter. My husband and I got back together after much counseling and we had another baby. I had a doctor lined up " just in case " I had PPD again... I didn't. They wanted me to take Paxil, but I refused. Eventually my Mother In Law decided that she wanted my children, and she plays dirty. I had myself evaluated just to fight her accusation that I was insane. I tested out fine.. on no drugs. I moved to SC to get away from my MIL and her involvement in my marriage and family. I started having panic attacks when I was pregnant with my son. They went away with no meds after giving birth. When my son was six months old... I started feeling that things weren't ok. I had no energy, and bouts of amnesia. Then I lost my short term memory and couldn't function to care for my kids. The doctors said it was stress, but I knew better. There were no longer any major stressors in my life... and I had faired just fine through some really major ones. Stress didn't explain what was happening to me. I called CPS to get help with the kids because I didn't want my MIL to ger her hands on them. (I did not consider her fit to raise my children... it wasn't because she and I didn't get along). They investigated and concluded that nothing was wrong with me and that I was just a hyprochondriac... or so they told the mental health clinic where I couldn't get help because they had already determined before they met me that nothing was wrong and I was just trying to " use " the system... give me a break. I moved to VA to get help from my family with my kids, but they were too involved with their careers to be available to help. One of the social workers there suggested to me that I have my thyroid checked because what she saw in my behavior reminded her of herself when she was younger and had problems with her thyroid. I moved again back to my home town where the doctors knew me and would believe me that something was very wrong with me. My thyroid checked out fine, and I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and put on Lithium and Paxil. That was about 2 1/2 years ago. The medications were effective in relieving the suicidal obsessive thoughts, and helping me to control my behavior, but the emotional rollercoaster was still going on internally. Also, I still had very little energy to fix meals and to give any real attention to the kids and their needs. We got by...but that was about it. Every appointmen (scheduled 3 months apart) I was steadily gaining 10 lbs. This past spring, I paniced as I was quickly approaching 200 lbs. My doctor kept giving me lectures about being more active and eating less... I did good to walk to the bathroom and back. It took all the strength I had. I showered once a week with my husband's help. Out of desperation I called an old counselor who had become a friend. I asked her if she knew of anything without stimulants that could give me more energy so that I could fight this weight gain. She told me that she doesn't make it a practice to recommend suppliments, but told me of a few to check into. I chose the one that looked most complete to me. It is in powder form and is easily absorbable. the resulting energy was almost instantaeous as was also the unexpected stop of severe mood swings. Within a few weeks, I noticed that the bathtub was no longer clogged with my hair after each shower, and was in shock when I realized that I was cleaning the tub again. I had a few yardsales, organized my house, put my kids in school... because now I could stay awake to drive them back and forth. I found a job with a chore service to celebrate my ablility to not only take care of myself, my home, and my family, but to help care for the elderly and handicapped as well. I promised God that if He would heal me, then I would help others in my situation. What I came to realize is that my problems were probably nutrition related all along. I am now off of the lithium and am doing fine. I've been decreasing the Paxil slowly and have hit a few bumps in the road to wellness. I'm so very grateful for the help and guidance I've received from some of the people on this list. I come here for support and to gain new knowledge that can help me reach my goal to be as healthy as I can be and to help others to do the same. Thanks for inviting me here. Guest guest
Dear Marlena Thank you for telling us your story. It great that you are recovering from sickness to health. Yes, In our society no one is taught about real nutrition . We get in trouble with our health and instead of getting what we need to bring our system back to well being. We are given drugs (big business), that usually mask the symptoms and cause further damage in the system. Most of the disease in our society is based exactly on what happened to you. It isn't your fault. You were indoctrinated into what the most powerfull business interests wanted you to believe as a consumer. i.e. processed food, medical industry, etc. No one made any money off teaching children or parents about nutrition. Im glad you are tapering off of the Paxil, this type of medication (ssri) can be particularly vicious and dangerous. Guest guest
Dear Kayla, Im assuming you want input about your situation from the members. Would you tell us more about yourself and your situation? Do you take any medicine? Do you take any herbal preperations? Do you take any vitamins or nutritional supplements? When you were on the low carb diet, I take that to mean high protien and ? Could you describe it a little. What is your diet like now? How going down hill? I just mean a lack of energy and lots of aches and pains in joints and muscles. I have a lot of trouble with constipation and since changing to a basically vegan diet I have terrible gas, makes me hate to go anywhere. I also have frequent headaches lately. I think that about covers my main complaints. Nothing life threatening just want to feel better. Guest guest
Great news about your improved health! What was the supplement you took? Don't hold out. Namaste, Liz
Guest guest
Getting most of your protein from soy may not be a good idea - soy can shut down the thyroid -- go to the Weston Price Foundation and read up on soy -- not what its marketers (big business-- MOnsanto Corp) want us to know -- here's the link : http://www.westonaprice.org/splash_2.htm Namaste, Liz
