pure apple juice with pectin added will help. Also prunes, figs and plums

are good for constipation.

she should have a hot drink every morning, about a cup full. this should be

done before eating. Make this a habit at the same time each morning upon

waking.

A tablespoon of castor oil will be good too.

Dear Jessica,

According to my experience, constipation is the cause

for most of our diseases and health problems.

The best thing to avoid constipation is to eat fruits

and vegetables, mostly raw or semi cooked with no

condiments and additives. Fruits and vegetables eaten

raw have their own taste that needs to be cultivated.

Who does not like cucumber, tomato, onions and the

like.\? Dont eat cereals and pulses or beans in seed

form and you will see that constipation would

disappear and at the same time, it would start

controlling or reducing body weight too.

If you have specific queries, please let me know. I am

dealing with constipation in that manner since the age

of 60 years to now when I am 75 plus without any need

to take any anti-constipation medicines or drugs.

Of course, if need be " isbgol " (I gorget its other

name but it is available at any Indian store, can be

taken at bed time as per directions of your family

physician or vaidya but don't make it a habit.

You may also take the advice of other online experts

and friends.

Wishing your mother speedy recoveryfrom this rather a

nasty condition called chronic constipation,

There are so many causes for constipation.

There is a chance too that she has had her pelvic

floor drop - this is highly possible for a woman who

has children.

Can you give details about what kind of grains she

eats.

If you give a bit of detail about the diet that will

help.

But htere is also the possibility that she has poor

flora in the intestine - there is the possibility that

she has pelvic floor issues.

Could be that she needs to do some cleansing to remove

obstruction in the intestines.

Could be that she needs pancha karma to increase agni.

So many things are possible.

Without more details it is hard to judge the root

cause of the obesity or the constipation.

Coconut oil everyday will help. Swiss Kriss as a

laxative temporarily. Nature's Tea by Unicity everyday

along with LiFibre to help balance the bowels and move

waste material. She may also want to do a parasite

cleanse. Parasites can back up the bowels and prevent

absorption.

I suffered the same for many years although I'm quite thin.

Consuming a large amount of fiber works well, but not alone.

Lots of bran, daily apple(s), fruits and vegetables. Having

good balance in my intestinal tract with all the right bacteria.

Exercise I think is important (in my case Yoga asanas for 1.5 hours 4

to 5 times weekly). I think my daily consumption

of black tea was part of the problem. My doctor suggested

giving up black tea and having hot coffee each morning. All these

factors put together work well for me. I do have to consume

far more fiber than most people and suffer extreme

constipation when traveling unless I take my own fiber

in the form of bran cereal with a very high fiber content.

When I was having chemotherapy, I dealt with this and this is what I found

works:

Get some of the fiber drink that mixes into everything (I cant think of the

brand name) but it's like metamucil except that it mixes up clear and not gritty

so you can add it to everything. Also there are tablets that you can crunch on.

Taking a " colon cleanser " with senna daily helped.

Drinking prune juice, pear juice & eating cherries, plums & blueberries

Taking a 100mg stool softener twice a day.

walking

massaging my tummy in an " L " pattern - so working across to the left and down. A

massage therapist can work wonders. So can certain yoga positions & breathing

(after walking).

Naturopaths have lots of choices.

Taking 2000mgs of Vitamin C

My husband swears by his cup of coffee in the morning & a bran muffin.

Supposedly Aloe vera juice works but I never tried it and ofcourse the old

remedies of castor oil or mineral oil but those are rough on your system.

I also discovered that there are clinics out there that specialize in cleansing

colons. I never tried them but I have a friend who swears by the treatments.

Anyway, each person reacts to different things. Walking, water, fruit and a

litte senna each day may be all she needs. Good luck.

My mother suffers from terrible constipation and has for many years,

for her to go a week without having a bowl movement. She says it is

convinced that the one health issue must have something to do with the

other. She tries adding extra fiber to her diet, which is already

but none of it seems to help. I have suggested that she drink a glass

of warm water with lemon every morning when she wakes up to try and

detox. Can you think of anything else that could help her?

Most of the grains she eats are wheat and rice, like most Americans, but she

does do almost everything whole grain. I've tried to convince her to add other

grains but she always just says " I don't like oatmeal " . We did Spelt bread for

a while. I'm trying to convince her that buying those kinds of organic foods

isn't really more expensive, as I have found that it isnt. She loves breads and

pastas, they are her favorite foods.

My mom loves veggies but usually prepares them steamed. She never overcooks

them, she taught me that overcooking ruins a vegetable in every way. She eats

meat regularly but only very lean meat and fish. She has actually been

constantly on one type of diet or another for the past 15 years. She refuses to

do the high protien thing, partly because its bad for you and partly because she

wont give up bread. I tend to agree with her, diet should encompass all the

food groups. But she swears that shes tried lots of different fiber supplements

and nothing has worked.

Careful with Senna as it drains the bowels and is more appropriate for

acute situations. For a more chronic condition of constipation she can

try persica and cistanches, 2 Chinese herbs that moisten the

intestines to encourage bowel movements. You should be able to find a

pill form (Chinese patent formula) at your local health food store or

you can try here

I used to have the same problem. In fact, the doc told me I had IBS...and put me

on meds...but I refused to stay on those meds. I started taking PROBIOTICS, they

provide the intestinal flora that some of us dont have...they keep your

intestines healthy. At first I took about 4 a day, now I take two a day. Make

sure they are good ones though. Do not buy the ones that are refridgerated.

Also, make sure they include FOS (fructo-something) because that provides the

necessary sugars to help break down the food in the intestine.

Along with the added fiber, I would recommend to her two things:

One, if she is not already, have her gradually increase her water

intake. Eventually she may want to be drinking as much as one half her

body weight in ounces.

Two, regular gentle exercise like walking for at least thirty minutes

a day will help her bowels move. It is the increased blood flow

through the body during exercise which helps remove toxins, flushing

them through the body by way of the liver, kidneys and bowels, and her

sweat.

It's been fairly well documented that obesity can contribute to

constipation, and as constipation causes a backlog of toxins in the

body which it cannot effectively remove, it has to store them in some

fashion. Usually in fatty tissues of one sort or another. Which

eventually leads to obesity as the body cannot effectively regulate

itself.

If you ask her to drink the water with lemon in the morning, try it

with cold water instead. The cold water in the system causes the body

to focus its energy on digesting what is in the system instead of

sening its energy resources elsewhere. Increased digestion activity

usually leads to greater bowel movements.

A good probiotic might be a worthwhile investment for the same reason

as well.

As far as the green tea goes == try Essiac tea. It is also good for

weight loss, as I understand it. Most health food stores should have

it. If not, check with some of the more ethnic markets and ask around.

But more importantly, make sure that your mother talks to her doctor

before she attempts any extended kind of exercise or dieting regimen.

And if the doctor she has now won't listen to her, then perhaps,

insurance permitting, it is time for a new doctor.

But that is just my opinion. Take what resonates, bless the rest.

All best to you and yours,

Dawn

Your mother's problem sounds more complicated, however, eat figs every day-if

you can't get fresh ones-there is one you can purchase in the health food shop

or pharmacy which is a compressed block of figs-it can do wonders, a small slice

each day or twice per day til the problem shifts then once per day to help keep

regular. If she doesn't like figs then see if there is a choc coated fig in the

confectionary store to help hide the flavour.

A few things could be suggested - she could get up early - seven o'clock - eat a

peice of ginger and then do some walking for fifteen minutes she could try to

eat food in the more pita time after ten. I have found this to work very well.

Eat a fruit for breakfast - kapha people who eat big breakfasts often do not

feel comfortable and then eat toget out of the discomfort.

oatmeal would not really be the best as it is very sticky and could make the

constipation worse.

She could then eat lunch around 12 steamed vegetables - pasta some protien

with a bit of spice - cumin, ginger, cayanne to get digestive fire up.

A piece of ginger after food for digestion and sitting straight for a few

moments after meals helps quicken digestion.

she could go for a walk half an hour after meals and do a little wieght

lifting - five pound weights are fine.

Supper should be before seven or eight and then another peice of ginger.

Triphala and hot water before bed.

She could also do some breathing in the morning - I would suggest bastrika

pranayama.

This should help a bit I hope.

I wonder if it could be related to her hormones? Is she menopausal or

peri-menopausal? I'm definitely no doctor, however, I've noticed

since I entered my late 30's, I have about 2 or 3 days of

constipation when I PMS. It's quite a blow to me when it happens

because I generally have two to three b-movements each day. But when

I PMS, I have 2 or 3 days when I don't go until late in the day and

then I have bowel cramping and a headache. Once I've moved on to the

next phase of PMS, I'm back to being regular. If it's possibly

related to hormones, then she needs to press her doctor on it or

better yet see a naturopath or homeopath who won't try to push

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) drugs on her if it is her hormones

causing the constipation. HRT DOES cause breast cancer, my sister is

living proof.

I agree with Misty about the water situation. I'd check to see just

how much water she's actually drinking especially if does eat a high

fiber diet. Fiber can actually be constipating without enough water

consumption. Or maybe also look at foods, supplements, liquids she

takes in that might possibly be diuretic. Even if she's drinking a

lot of water, if she consumes food stuffs that have a diuretic affect

(like coffee, dandelion tea, etc.) that will offset some of the water

she's drinking.

She might also need some pro-biotics or digestive enzymes. There was

a naturopath on PBS a couple of months ago talking about the 4

elements that keep people regular: High Fiber, Omega-3, Probiotics,

Enzymes. Sounds like she is doing the first two, fiber and O3, but it

might be worth investigating probiotics and enzymes further also.

Hope this helps!

God bless,

Leslie

When we eat chapati (the Indian bread) we buy wheat and get it

powdered in flour mill. We add 500 grams of Soyabean to 4 KG of

wheat while grinding. While kneeding the dough, we add two spoons of

castor oil. Chapati made from this dough gives very good motion

becasue of the castor oil.

Hi Jessica!

There are numerous healing benefits from eating dark leafy

greens. The fiber in spinach for example provides relief from

constipation whenever eaten raw or lightly cooked (steamed in fine

as well). We use frozen varieties, however fresh contains

considerably more nutrients. Regardless of which method of cooking

is used, the results are the same. The fiber in the frozen/fresh

greens works to clear out the rid the toxic waste in the colon.

I use one small box of frozen spinach each day. When cooked lightly

most of the fiber remains intact!

Blessings,

JoAnn

If you need to do a gross evacuation of your mother's bowel before you

establish good bowel flora and good dietary habits - then to clear things

out totally try this - it is powerful and quick acting:-

First thing in the morning take

two heaping tablespoons of Epsom's Salts in

a glass of warm water (a clothes peg on the nose with help with the taste if

your mum is sensitive)

quickly followed by a hot cup of black tea with milk -

follow these instructions to the letter and within an hour an evacuation

will occur and probably throughout the day if your mum is that far impacted.

She would need to rest and take plenty of fluids and fruits through the day

as it is quite an exhausting experience and can easily dehydrate people.

Your body's Many Cries for water is useful in cases like this too.

I once read adding soybeans to wheat while powdering and using for making

chapatis, causes Correxia. Is this true? Can anyone throw some light on this?

To all friends,

When we try to get relief from constipation in older age, we have

consider the role of Vata in the body, age and season.

Usually I suggest following in my practice - which is very helpful

in most cases. Drink 1 glass (200 ml) warm milk + 1 tsf pure cow's

ghee and 2 pinch of ginger powder, at bed time. This produces good

sleep too. After 15 to 20 days, when intestines will be smoother

from within, the person will not need to have any laxative. Only

this recepy works. You can continue as long as you wish.

Best wishes,

Dr. Prerak Shah

Author agrres with what Dr. Prerak has suggested. He would like to

add some more spice. This tonic author often

suggests to elderlies. You can see the same procedure as a daily

bedtime laxative in file " Eight Day Detox Program.doc " stored at the

link

http://health.ayurvedaarticles/Dr.

%20BhateFiles/

with one difference, 1 tsf cow ghee is replaced by 1-2 tsp Castor oil

and 2 pinches ginger powder is replaced by 1/2 tsp ginger powder. The

reasons are:

1. YOu may not get Indian cow ghee even in Ahmedabad easily, but

castor oil is available even in Alaska.

2. With other special food in 8 day Detox program, even castor oil 1-

2 tsp will not be damaging, even for 70 plus people. the green juices,

leafy veggies, lemon water will be hydrating the colon to an extent

that body's intelligence will be activated to attack the toxicity of

castor oil. And in the whole planet nothing is more greasy than

castor oil! That is why at one time it was being used as lubricant in

30,000 feet high flying jets.

3. 1-2 tsp means start at 1 tsp and slowly go to 2 tsp depending on

need and response.

4. When you force the colon to submit to elimination, you must

provide nutrition too, that is why milk is needed. Milk serves as

sugar coating to bitter pill, author provides even candy sugar and

cardamom too, so that taking castor oil becomes easy. Milk and ghee provides

protection from corroding/eroding tendency of many toxic herbs. Secondly milk

fat provides communication ability to cells, an essential glyconutrient with

lactose.

5. Gindger powder when boiled in milk is a strong vata pacifier, as

vipaka is " madhur " . Most arthritis cases yield to this bedtime tonic.

Mixing aswagandha (1 tsp) for old people gives still better sleep, as

aswgandha has seretonic precursor! That is why name somnifera. And

boiling till all water evaporates cooks aswagandha too, so that more

somniferum is released. For a dehydrated spastic colon, energy in the form of

lactose and candy sugar (Khadi sakkar) is needed for action. That is why these

day people have another motion after tea/coffee. It is not caffeine but

sugar+milk which is the driving force.

6. Lastly, please do not ask where one gets Indian cow milk! Take

cows from India and look after them with love and affection, rather

than making them milk machines.

I am obese also and my doctor ignores everything else as well. I

have thyroid disease and the " numbers " are within the range they are

supposed to be so it is assumed that i eat too much. My caloric

intake is 1500 calories a day so there is no reason why i should

weigh 310 pounds, but, it is ignored and assumed i am not truthful.

Seems like nowadays doctors dont care or either have too much on

their plates so they can't give the attention that is deserved.

Dear Jessica,

RE: Constipation issue

You say your mom is obese. Is she on any kind of excersize program? Walking

and stretching? If she is unable to walk for any distance, begin with stretching

excersizes-work her up to walking ten minutes a day... then gradually build up

to 30 minutes at least five days a week. Of course, she will need to continue to

drink (7-9 glasses of) water everyday, eat plenty of wholesome foods..six small

meals a day .. rather the three square meals. Her constipation sounds pretty

serious to me... she needs an active plan to rebalance her body. Don't forget

fiber and good vitamin supplements!

Best wishes,

Susan
