I would submit that there's more to a republic than simply having

representative democracy instead of direct democracy. There's the idea

of limited constitutonal government -- so that everything is NOT

determined by majority rule, either directly or indirectly. This is the

idea of freedom vs. democracy. As the saying goes, " Democracy is two

wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner. "

There are a number of different forms of government throughout the world

including thocracies, dictatorships, monarchies, democracies, and

republics. We indeed live in a republic. Most people confuse our

government with that of a democracy where everything is run by an actual
