Blueberries may fight prostate cancer

Matrix metalloproteinases are enzymes that break down cellular tissue

proteins such as collagen that lie in between cells. Because of the ability to

knock down protective barriers these enzymes are active in cancer metastasis.

These scientists investigated if blueberry polyphenols can inhibit these

metalloproteinase enzymes in prostate cancer tissue and therefore help prevent

the spread of this cancer. The blueberry polyphenols as it turns out work in

various ways to inhibit these prostate cancer spreading enzymes. The polyphenols

stimulate the release of metalloproteinase inhibitors within the cells and the

polyphenols directly inhibit these cancer associated enzymes. The research was

performed at the department of Biology, University of Prince Edward Island, in

Canada, and is published in the August 2005 issue of The Journal of Nutritional

Biochemistry.
