Guest guest
Besides diet and exercise??? Welllllll, you just ruled out the two best tools for that particular problem. Guest guest
I am sure if you go back to previous posts of a few months ago there will be quite a bit of information about Niacin. I have had the potential problem with cholesterol for many years; and found that 300-500mg of Niacin (release assured) three times a day worked wonders. Mine went from 310 to 167 in six weeks and has remained so for the past 15 years or so…with Niacin and a more or less vegetarian diet. Guest guest
Start taking garlic and cayenne. Drink a glass of red wine at dinner. Omega oils are good for you all the way around. UDO's 3-6-9 is the best I've ever tried and it has all 3 types of oils in it. Change what you eat to certified organic. You might want to consider a liver cleanse as well, as the liver produces cholesterol. Guest guest
ok, i looked into the niacin -- and that is definitely a no go. this is what my nutrition book said - " niacin...has some undesireable side effects. Starting at doses of 100mg(which is what doctors prescribe), typical symtptoms include flushing, tingling, itching, rashes, hives, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Flushing of the face, neck, and chest last for about 20 minutes after taking dose. More serious side effects of large doses include liver damage, high blood sugar levels, and abnormal heart rhythm. " (Nutrition for Foodservice and Culinary Professionals, 4th ed.,2001) I don't know which is worse, high cholestrol or the chances of so many other problems. So, I'm not taking any chances with the niacin. Everyone is saying garlic is really good, so I'm going to eat a lot of it --- are garlic pills any good? any brand better than another? Also, eggplants and oats are supposed to be really good. So, I'm going to eat a bowl of oatmeal everyday w/1 tbl of flaxseed and as much eggplants and garlic as I can take. And combine that with regular exercise and reduced fats. Hopefully it will work. I'm getting my cholestrol checked again in 2 weeks... thanks everyone for the advice. I really do appreciate it!! Guest guest
Alex, if you listened to the commercials on TV about all the side effects which *can* occur from taking whatever, you would never take anything, not even as asperine. Not all people are susceptable to all the negative side effects. Nearly everything has some negative effects. They have to be listed for folks to be on the look-out. Some claim that until one reaches the stage of flushing they aren't getting enough! I took it long enough to bring mine down to, if i remember right, 257 from 304 , never reached the flushing point, and then, not having much self disciplin, just quit taking it. I don't recall having any negative side effects, and subsequent liver, blood, etc tests showed no signs of negativity. One does have to watch for symptoms from the begining and be aware of what can happen, even with an aspirin as they can be quite dangerous. They can eat holes in the stomach lining. The Niacin the MD's usually prescribe may be time pills and are usually very expensive but aside from being more convenient probably aren't any better than the OTC you can get in the vitamin counter. That is what i used. I probably should get back on them but taking enough pills as is! Good luck and Bless. Guest guest
Whoa…1444. You need to be real careful with such. I use Niacin, the “release assured” type. It will cause flushing, and that is to be expected. But it only lasts about 15 minutes. The first time you experience this you will think it is a bad reaction. It is normal. My advice though is that if you are working with a physician now, go ahead and ask him to do a liver functions test prior to beginning this. Then go back in six weeks for a follow-up. If by then your liver as well as your cholesterol levels are good, you’ll know you are on the right track. There have been some really good posts here recently as well…diet is a very important factor: lots of fish instead of red meat (mackerel is cheap and loaded with really good oils); water instead of sugary drinks; more green veggies than anything else ( you really do get to the point where you PREFER them, and truly enjoy them);less salt; more foods high in potassium such as broccoli); OATMEAL daily; avoid eggs, grease, bacon, fried food. Look up Asian and Mediterranean recipes for some good healthy ideas and tasty food. I do cheat occasionally on my diet…it always makes me a bit ill and bloated afterward (you FEEL the difference after eating healthy for a while then eating the junk again), but it removes the desire for such, and helps one stay on track in the main. Guest guest
Hi Gaye, I would suggest that you stay away from sustained or timed release niacin as it is being implicated in liver damage. For the olive oil and lemon juice, I do believe that you would be perfectly safe without using herbs. The olive oil will lubricate the whole system. But if you really want to open this up then take a tablespoon of epsom salts in a glass of warm water and drink it about a half hour before doing the olive oil/lemon juice. I would suggest that when you can, do the full liver/gallbladder cleanse, bowel cleanse, kidney/bladder cleanse and then the total body cleanse. You can also use garlic and cayenne to regulate your circulation if you are having such a problem with niacin. When you get your body detoxed more you might try adding the regular niacin back in but not the timed release. Another detox trick is to start drinking lots of distilled water with the juice of a fresh lemon squeezed into it. Every glass of water you drink add the lemon. This will help to detox and remove lots of mucus from the cellular level on up. Try to drink at least 1 gal. of water per day. You might also consider doing three day juice fasts using either organic carrot, grape, or apple juice. This will assist in removing a lot of stagnant lymph and mucus from your body and help to cleanse the blood. You can begin to cleanse out your kidney/bladder by using the recipe Doc posted the other day (Juniper berries, Uva Ursi, Corn silk). What is your diet like? HTH, Don Quai ---- herbal remedies 07. July 2003 08:28:47 PM herbal remedies Re: [herbal remedies] high cholestrol Hi Don, Thanks for your reply, I take niacin for circulationproblems....BUT, I have to take timed-release because I am verysensitive to it...I break out in hives, itch, throat closes up..even acertain brand of timed-release had this effect on me, so I have to becareful...It makes me think that what you said about the bileducts/liver/intestinal cleansing is something I should do...Perhaps theniacin is stirring up these toxins & causing these symptoms?? Can youtell me a simple way to cleanse the bile ducts/liver? (I do take cascarasagrada every now & then for intestinal cleansing) I have seen the olive oil & lemon juice cleanse, but was warned if youdon't take certain herbs to open up the bile duct(s), that you couldhave a major problem...I have done this, "years" ago....along with theherbs, clorophyl, etc. Just not able to purchase these at thistime...But the olive oil/lemon juice cleanse is something I could do, asI have these items...What's your opinion of this? Guest guest
I am especially going to try using it to fight my weight problem and high cholesterol. Our bodies react to a chronic lack of water by doing several things. One is to constrict the blood vessels to compensate for the lack of water. Anotehr is to create more cholesterol to ine the cells and blood vessals with to slow down the loss of water. It is important to remember that drinking coffee, teas, sodas, milk, juices and so forth are NOT A REPALCEMENT FOR WATER!!! FOr every ounce of the above taht you drink your body looses TWO ounces of water processing them. If you think that you are getting enough water and you are relying on stuff other then water, (including cyrstal light, koolaid, gateraid, flavored waters, mineral waters, etc. you are not getting the water that you need. Dr. Batmanghelji says to CURE yourself of high cholsterol drink tow glasses of water before each meal (during and after do not work the same.) It not only heals the Gerd (heartburn) but the first glass goes throught the the stomach and the second plumps the stomach lining. I have found the side effect of doing this - loosing weight - to be a pleasant one. Even folks who have heritary high cholestrol respond to this. Western medicine will not teach you this, that is focused on treatments and costly meds. Do try to get a copy of Dr. Batmanghelji's book " Your Bodies Many Cries for Water " Happy Easter Laura
