I recently had a conversation with a student of natural health who believed that a little red wine is good for you and thins the blood. In fact, I believe her cultural love for wine may have been influencing her values in this regard. I think many wish that wine would be a health food since they drink so much of it. Many have been led to believe that wine thins the blood. I once watched a documentary film which showed how alcohol actually causes the blood cells to clump together. A film had been made of a blood vein as the animal was given progressively more alcohol. The higher to alcohol content the thicker the blood got, until it finally hardly moved at all. This results in loss of oxygen to the brain; every time you consume alcohol, you kill some brain cells. During World War II when the French were not able to obtain wine, there was a significant increase in the health of the country. Many cancers and other diseases are linked to the consumption of alcohol and the toxic affect it has on the body, yet a person who is under a lot of stress can innocently slip into alcoholism as an escape from daily problems. If one drinks enough wine, eventually he may develop psychosis from the brain damage and can black outs where he loses hours or days where he has absolutely no recall of what he was doing during that time. One person reportedly flew to Europe and back and had no recall of doing so. The other problem with alcohol such as found in wine is it affects a person's emotional response. This can be very confusing to those who think the person is being sincere when, in fact, they were just mildly drunk. The next day their attitude is totally changed and they are wondering what made you think otherwise. Very crazy making for friends and families. It seems so many of our cultural habits are unhealthy and shorten our lives. Sure the juice part is good, but that does not compensate for the physical damage done by the alcohol in the juice. If anyone believes they have developed an alcohol problem, I urge them to get into AA. Wine is not one of the 5 daily fruits and vegetables we need for good health, and it can ruin or shorten your life or even land you in jail.
