Hello Steph,

Let me explain a little about the thryoid gland and why you need to get on

top of your medication, and what I actually need before I would even attempt to

recommend an herbal and food treatment. For now what I said in my last post was

stop eating the brassica family of vegetables Broccoli and cabbage slow thyroid

function.. It would not hurt you to take Sea kelp. I take this daily anyway. I

buy Organic seakelp from the North Atlantic, whihc is high in Iodine. Sea kelp

is a concentrated source of minerals... potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium and

iodine, and others. Everyone should be taking this daily anyway. Iodine

deficiency can cause low thyroid function. Has your Doctor told you what your

Iodine levels are?

Also, here are a few things you need to know. The medication you are on, in

most people makes them lifetime dependent on thyroid medication. The thyroid

gland produces two types of thyroid hormone, T4( about 80% is in this form) and

T3( about 20% is in this form). T4 is the inactive form and T3 is the active

form The hormones are bound in the blood to a Protein( thyroid blood globulin)

or TBG. IT is a protein surrounded by 4 molecules and 3 molecules. IT is help

inactive in this form until it reaches the cell. T4 is then activated in the

cell. THis protein can be manipulated by many things, other medications alcohol

illness etcand IT is possible that you have a functional thyroid deficiency.

This is where adequate levels of thyroid exist, but your cells fail to convert

T4 to T3. In that case taking the medication you are presently taking, which is

a T4 medication is not adquate. This is why 80 percent of people who combine

this with a T3 drug feel better. Has your doctor

explained that to you? Do you experience Dizziness, brain fog, as well as

fatigue. This is a sign that your t3 levels are low. So perhaps your cells are

not converting T4 to T3. This can be corrected herbally and with diet. Selenium

is extremely important in thyroid function. Has your doctor checked your

selenium levels. The greatest sourceof selenium is in Brazil nuts. Even greater

than pills. Most people have inadequate mineral levels in their body, THe four

basic minerals that you absolutely need are calcium. magnesium. potassium and

phosphorous. Most people are even lower in what are commonly called trace

minerals, but these( copper, zinc, selenium etc) are extremely important in the

body. Selenium is used by the body to process toxins, and is easily used up, so

you could be deficient in selenium Has your doctor checked your estrogen levels,

progesterone levels, done an AAM/PM cortisol level check, checked estrdiol and

DHEA's? This is done with a saliva test. Has he/she done

that? Without doing that you cannot properly diagnose a thyroid deficiency.

Please get back to me and let me know the answers to these questions. The

thyroid is too delicate an organ to just prescribe without knowing the answers

to these questions. WITH LOVE MARK

Hi Mark,

Since I'm the person that didn't give a whole lot of info on my thyroid I'll

give it to you now...lol

I don't know a whole lot about my thyroid other than it is underactive. I'm

currently on 88mg of Levothroid which honestly I think needs to be upped but

because my current doctor is moving her practice, I couldn't get past the nurse

and have a blood test recommended. I am do for one since my doc said every 6

months and it's been 7 months since I've been tested again. I was diagnosed with

low thyroid 10 months after my last child was born. My mother also has a

underactive thyroid so it does run in the family. I am 5'2 " and weigh in at

125lbs. I still have the " baby belly " and more meat on my thighs and hips but

certainly not over weight.

The person really didn't give enough information about her thyroid to be

prescribing basil. The only thing she said was that her thyroid was slow
