" Nongenetic factors, such as aspects of lifestyle, may explain [approximately] 40% of the risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), " write Dorothy J. Pattison, PhD, from the University of Manchester, U.K., and colleagues. " Cigarette smoking has consistently been found to be a risk factor for the development of inflammatory polyarthritis and its subset RA. There is much less evidence of a role for nutritional factors, and the existing evidence is somewhat variable.
