Red Meat Consumption May Be Linked to Inflammatory Arthritis

Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004

Medscape Medical News 2004

High level of red meat consumption may be a risk factor for

inflammatory arthritis, according to the results of a nested case-

control study published in the December issue of Arthritis &

Rheumatism. " Nongenetic factors, such as aspects of lifestyle, may

explain [approximately] 40% of the risk of rheumatoid arthritis

(RA), " write Dorothy J. Pattison, PhD, from the University of

Manchester, U.K., and colleagues. " Cigarette smoking has

consistently been found to be a risk factor for the development of

inflammatory polyarthritis and its subset RA. There is much less

evidence of a role for nutritional factors, and the

existing evidence is somewhat variable. "
