Guest guest
Thanks Misty. I read the article and it does have some frightening possibilities. I suspect that the pregnant women and adults mentioned in the article as also being tested would refer to adults in any government program, such as subsidized counseling and prenatal care through Medicaid and Medicare. One only need look at the huge numbers of these people who are already being given psychotropic drugs to see where this could lead. I've worked in social services for many years and have been astounded at the number of low income, elderly and disabled individuals who have been placed on mood/mind altering drugs in the past 10 years, including children. I have not seen any figures on this and would be very interested in seeing any articles or studies that have been done concerning this situation. Every time I hear about the strain on the Medicare system I cringe because I know a large proportion of this drain is going straight to the drug industry as more and more psychotropic drugs are being prescribed. I have been in the position of taking clients to psychiatrists for monthly or bi-monthly medication checks where the psychiatrist spends 5 minutes or so with each client, renews the prescriptions, sometimes adding an additional psychotropic and then sends them on their way and ushers in the next med check medicaid client. There are many ways this health system is being bilked and this is one of them. The use of behavioral meds for children is probably the worst of this. I too would fear for the health of our children if the system had more access to our children than they now do.
