Guest guest
Hi everyone, I have questions about sprouts and I'm sure this list can help. My actual knowledge on this subject is rather sparse so I'm hoping to learn more and to confirm what I think I already know. #1 What can be sprouted? Are we talking about only seeds? Or perhaps some dry grains like millet? #2 How nutrient packed are they? I know they are supposed to be a real powerhouse but what are the exact benefits? #3 How much water is needed? How much rinsing is crucial to the sprouts actually growing? Can any of the water be reserved and used again for rinsing or cooking of the sprouts? #4 What is the setup cost? What do you approximate is the cost of using sprouts in your diet once a day as compared to other foods that have similar health benefits? My kids have been fundraising for the Red Cross since they heard about the horrible storm [Tropical Storm Jeanne for the curious] that damaged Haiti's bread basket area this past September. Their concern is not only for the loss of life and grief these people have suffered but also their ability to grow their own food b/c they've lost the topsoil due to floods and deforestation. It's a big mess actually. I've been thinking - why can't sprouts be provided by the UN and other relief agencies in a time of crisis and for refugee camps? We've done a lot of research into the refugee crisis and what the typical refugee diet is. Let me tell you - we're not talking about a lot of raw produce. In many cases there isn't any. Wasn't it just this list that had the article about malnutrition and anti-social behavior? If kids aren't well nourished as refugees what implications follow for their adulthood as they seek to heal from all the conflict and war they've suffered? Seems like a really viscious cycle. But if they WERE receiving good nutrition [and of course, education] how would that change the picture? I'm thinking that any of you who are interested could help me gather info. and whip it into a proposal of sorts to be distributed within the UN and Red Cross for policy makers to read. How awesome would it be if we could effect change on THAT level? If Misty doesn't object we could discuss this on-list or I can be reached at justdawne Many thanks to all, dawne Meet the all-new My - Try it today!
