RE: As family member of schizophrenic patient I think that

institutions are necessary for some paranoid schizophrenics.

I have worked with very severely impaired and institutionalized

schizophrenics and am aware of the problems.

I've observed first hand what seemed to be a miraculous " cure "

during a single session involving radical therapy.

I also witnessed first hand a catatonic schizophrenic who had been

institutionalized all of his life who appeared to be " cured " within

3 months without drugs and treatment by being brought to an

alternative therapeutic community where I lived as a staff person in

thew mid 1970s. The community still exists today in the Berkshires

near Pittsfield, Massachusetts. " John " had been institutionalized

all of his life in the Boston area. Last I heard, John was living a

normal life and had married. Just his removal from the institutional

setting and acceptance as a human being facilitated his cure.
