It is probably best to do this barefooted. However, it is not necessary. I live in Alaska. If I did this in winter, I would have frostbitten feet in a couple of minutes on certain days. You can do this with the rising or the setting sun. I would not do this before 30 minutes before or after the sun rises or sets. The reason is that the atmosphere of the rising or setting sun shields out the harmful rays that can burn the retina. 44 minutes could be harmful since the sun would be higher and potentially burn the retina. Also it is best not to blink. Good one to try.
