And how much is a Vitamix? Are there any other brands than Vitamix that do

the job?

RE: [s-A] Juicer/Vitamix

A juicer and a Vitamix are two very different appliances. I have a

Vitamix, and it is indeed a " big deal " - with a big price to match!

With a juicer, you eliminate all the nutritious fiber - although you

could probably find a use for it in breads or whatever. The juice from

a juicer gets digested quicker because it has no fiber. With a Vitamix

you get the whole food, and it breaks the fiber down so fine that it

releases more juice from the cells than a juice extractor does. I

always think that whole foods are better than just the extracted juice.

Mine was about $500 - 10 years ago. I think it is worth every cent. I

use it pretty much every single day - I usually drink my lunch every day

- a smoothie with either fruits or veggies. Today's lunch was soy milk,

banana, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, flax seeds. You can put

in flax seeds, and I even use the core of a pineapple, and the blades go

around so fast, like a gazillion mph, it pulverizes everything. I put

in skins of fruits if they are organic. Mine came with 2 hoppers, one

for grains and one for everything else. You can get a better price if

you don't want the 2 hoppers. You could probably also find used ones on

eBay for cheaper. I don't think any other brand of mixer would do the

job that a Vitamix can do. You can make soup in it - leave it run for 4

minutes, and it will heat the contents. You can make sorbet in it. You

can grate cheese, chop nuts, cut up cabbage for cole slaw. But you

can't slice veggies or make mashed potatoes.
