Guest guest
Hi folks, Anyone knowledgable about carrageenan? I had the creepiest experience the other day and I'm thinking carrageenan had something to do with it. I wanted to whip up a choc. pudding pie for my hubby. I made a really quick and easy pie crust with sea salt, water, and organic spelt flour. I grabbed a box of pudding from the cabinet and noticed that I only had a box that needed to be cooked in a pot, with milk. So I followed the directions to the letter. Basically adding milk to the powder mix. I let it cool in the pot for several minutes before pouring into my pie crust. All of a sudden I had a really STRONG impression that someone just blew cigarette smoke in my face. It was pretty gross. Living in Nova Scotia I am barely exposed to any second hand smoke b/c of the laws here. Still, I remember what smoke smells like and this was it. So naturally at this point I'm freaking out. Why should any of my food smell like carcinogens? I checked every appliance and all through the house and basement to find this smell. Nothing. Came back and sniffed the pie and there it was. I grabbed the box and read the ingredients. The ONLY one I didn't recognize was carrageenan. I thought this was red seaweed in some form. So I popped on the net and looked around. A few pages sang it's praises. A few pages said it's horrible for you. And one article shows it as listed GRAS [generally regarded as safe] through the FDA. Mind you, this same article shows memos within the FDA dating back to 1972 that will make you think twice. Seems it was never very thoroughly studied. [see a pattern here?] I read about risk of intestinal lesions and malignacies and said " that's it " . I'm off the stuff for good but I'm still curious. It's just in So MANY things that it feels like a hidden threat. Anyway, if the above it news to you I suggest you do some research. If what I've said is old hat and you know something I don't I'd appreciate hearing it. Me and the kids are now paying very close attention to ingredient lists. We aren't buying anything that we don't understand. My oldest daughter in particular is having fun learning about this stuff. So I suppose there is an upside.
