Trepke http://www..com Homeopathic Remedies in Ear Problems by Dr. Ardavan Shahrdar, 2000 Aconitum napellus Although there are not so many peculiar manifestations of this remedy in ears, one should know the earache picture of Aconitum. Auricle is red and hot. Meatus is inflamed, red and narrowed. There is a severe painful sensitivity in meatus, so, apparently, it is not possible to examine the ear easily by an otoscope. The earache has come suddenly and violently often due to exposure to cold dry wind. No suppuration is present. The most helpful symptoms in diagnosing Aconitum in a patient are his or her mental and general symptoms. The Aconitum patient is anxious, fearful and restless. Pains are sharp and intolerable. They may lead to howling and screaming. The patient is generally hot, dry and thirsty; usually with an high grade fever. Rapid pulse and palpitation is almost always present. The patient is worse at nights and from any external influence such as emotions, music, noise, etc. Perspiration soothes the situation. Agaricus muscarius Agaricus is famous in ear remedies because of its skin affections and peculiar sensations in auricle. Agaricus is the best remedy for chilblains, because in its proving the skin becomes red and inflamed with burning and itching. Sensation of cold needles piercing the skin, as if it is frozen, is one of the most important symptoms of Agaricus. All these skin manifestations may be seen in auricle, which is the indication for prescription of Agaricus whether they are due to frostbite or not. As is seen, Agaricus is mostly an external ear remedy. Aurum metallicum Aurum metallicum mostly affects middle ear, ossicula and mastoid process. It is an important remedy in caries of ossicula and mastoid process. It is also very useful in chronic suppurative otitis media when symptoms agree. There is an obstinate fetid otorrhea, which may fill the external meatus. The patient feels a burning, pricking itching in ears. Hearing may be impaired. Aurum metallicum is a remedy used in chronic cases. It is one of the important antipsorics. The patient is generally sad and melancholic with full of despair. His or her condition is aggravated at night and during rest. He is better by motion and walking in open air. The patient is oversensitive to noise but is ameliorated by music. Belladonna Although Belladonna can effect the whole ear, middle ear is affected predominantly. Otitis media is one of its important manifestations. There is a sudden onset of pain. The patient feels sharp, tearing, stitching and shooting pains. There is a distressing throbbing and beating pain, deep in ear, which is synchronous with heartbeat. The tearing pains may extend downwards or from external ear to both backward and forward to whole side of face. The tympanic membrane is bulging with injected bloodvessels. Pain causes the patient to become delirious. He may roll his head from side to side. Child may cry out in sleep from earache. Generally the patient radiates heat; especially in the upper part of the body. Face is hot and red. Eyes are red with dilated pupils. There is a prominent pulsation of carotids. Patient only sweats on covered parts and there is an absence of thirst during fever. He is aggravated by noise, touch, jar, motion and drafts and is better by rest. Capsicum This remedy has great effects on mastoid process and middle ear. There is a severe inflammation in mastoid process, behind the ear. Mastoid is swollen, painful and sensitive to touch. There are also drawing and tearing pains with itching deep in ears. Pains extend to throat. Ears are hot and red. Face is also red but cold to touch. There may be a suppurative otitis media with perforation of tympanic membrane. Ear discharges are thick and yellow. Eustachian tube is also painful and dry. Generally the patient is chilly and his or her condition is aggravated at nights, open air, uncovering and drafts and is better by heat. Chamomilla In Chamomilla, there is a severe pain in whole ear region. However, there is only a simple inflammatory condition rather than suppuration. Pains are tearing and stitching and are worse by stooping and external influences and better by warmth. During the otitis, auricle is usually red and hot. Chamomilla is mostly seen in children especially in dentition period. A Chamomilla patient is very irritable, angry and nervous. He can not tolerate the pain, which makes him anguish and angry. Pains extort crying. Child wants to be carried all the time, which ameliorates him. There may be a dull pressure and roaring in ears. Chininum sulphuricum Chininum sulphuricum is a famous tinnitus remedy. Therefore has great use in Meniere’s disease. Ear may be full of different noises; like buzzing, humming, ringing, roaring, rushing. There is also a diminished power and impairment of hearing which may become worse and worse to the degree of deafness. A whirling vertigo is often present during tinnitus. Twitching of eyelids, throbbing headache, difficult breathing and nausea may be other concomitants. Ferrum phosphoricum Ferrum phosphoricum is useful in first stages of inflammation but is not as violent as Aconitum or Belladonna. Dilatation, hyperemia and hemorrhage are common features of Ferrum phosphoricum. There is redness of meatus and hyperemia of tympanic membrane. Dilatation of bloodvessels causes dull, full feeling in head with pulsation felt in both head and ears accompanied by a humming sound or dull roar. Face is flushed and felt swollen. Although the patient may have a high fever, there is a lack of accompanying symptoms. Sudden or continued motion aggravates patient’s condition, especially the beating and hammering of ears. Graphites Graphites is important in skin symptoms of ears. There is eczematous eruption of auricle and around it. Dryness is a common feature of Graphites. Auricle and meatus are both dry; so dry that there are deep cracks in them. Cracks are especially located behind and below auricle. There is thick pus, which forms crust. Ears are swollen with moist eczemas behind ears, which spread over cheeks and neck. Hepar sulphuris There is suppurative otitis media with discharge. Extreme sensitiveness to contact, which is out of proportion to actual pain, is a prominent feature. The patient is extremely sensitive. Discharges are white, cheesy, bloody, offensive and long lasting which irritates the skin where they touch. There are little pustules in the meatus and auricle. Patient is irritable and bad- tempered. He or she cannot tolerate anything cold and is ameliorated by hot application. Patient is very chilly. Although there may be profuse perspiration, no amelioration is followed by. Earache is often associated with sore throat. Kali bichromicum Middle ear is generally affected in Kali bichromicum. There is a suppurative otitis media. It is also useful in chronic cases. Discharges are of thick, yellow, stringy, mucoid and foetid character. Tympanic membrane is often ulcerated and perforated. There are stinging from external meatus into internal ear, and sharp stitching pains which dart from the ear to throat. There is also a deep itching in ears. The patient may not be able to exactly mention the location of pain. The situation is often accompanied by discharges from nose, which are thick, stringy and ropy. Patient generally is worse in cold, uncovering and mornings and better by heat. Kali sulphuricum There is suppuration of middle ear and swelling of Eustachian tube. Discharges are muco-purulent, orange-yellow and sticky. Catarrh and swelling may cause deafness. It can complete the action of Pulsatilla when it fails to relieve permanently. Lachesis Although left-sided earache may occur, it is famous because of its peculiar sensations. There is a roaring noise in ears which is ameliorated by putting finger in ear. There are different noises such as whizzing like insects, cracking, drumming and reverberation. An annoying pulsation is felt in ears. There is a prominent dryness of ears. Ear wax is also hard and dry. There may be a left-sided deafness. The patient is extremely sensitive to wind. Generally, the patient is oversensitive. Mercurius Mercurius has vast effects on the whole ear. Although there is a cold feeling inside the ear, there is a burning heat externally. There are furuncles and boils in external ear. Middle ear is affected and suppurated. There is a profuse, thick, yellow, bloody and very offensive discharge. There may be watery discharge and hemorrhage from ears, too. Pains are mostly tearing, shooting and stitching. There are different patterns of extension of pains. Pains may extend from throat, teeth and different regions to ear. They may extend from beneath ear to jaw or from left ear through head to right ear and from there to left temple. Pains and discharges are all aggravated at nights and from warmth, heat of the bed and lying on left side. Deafness may occur which is relieved by blowing the nose. Patient is weak, exhausted, sensitive and chilly. Profuse cold perspiration may occur which not only does not cause amelioration, but also aggravates the patient condition. He is both aggravated by heat and chill; he is as easily chilled as overheated. Petroleum Skin affections are common in Petroleum. Skin of auricle is dry and eczematous with intense itching and desquamation. Patient feels a disagreeable dryness in ears too. There are also fissures in meatus. Maxillary lymphatic glands may be swollen. All skin affections of petroleum are dirty, hard, rough, thickened and aggravated in winter and better in summer. Psorinum Like Petroleum, skin affections are very important in Psorinum. There are raw, red, oozing scabs around ears. Eczemas with intense itching irritate the patient. Itching is intolerable and may cause despair. The patient may feel the itching inside his ear, too. There are also offensive discharges from eczematous eruptions. There is an offensive odor from all over the body and from ears. When otorrhea occurs, it is also offensive and purulent. Generally, the patient looks unhealthy and dirty. Pulsatilla Both otitis externa and media may be seen in Pulsatilla. External ear is hot, swollen and red. There is a sensation of plug, which affects the hearing. When there is suppuration, discharges are bland, inoffensive, yellow or yellowish green. Pains are aggravated at evening and night. Open air and walking slowly, ameliorates the patient. The patient is mild and tearful. She weeps pitifully. General symptoms such as chilliness, intolerance of closed rooms, shortness of breath, thirstlessness, changeability and emotional picture help for diagnosing Pulsatilla. Silica Silica has prominent effects on ears. There is suppuration of middle ear with perforation of tympanic membrane. Discharges are watery, offensive and sour smelling. Scabs cover purulent discharges. Child bores into its ears with fingers when asleep, causing a discharge of pus and blood. Caries of mastoid is also another important symptom of Silica. In this aspect, it follows well capsicum. Pains are mostly stitching and from within without. Itching in Eustachian tube is prominent. There is a feeling of sudden stoppage in ear, which becomes better by yawning or swallowing. Patient is chilly, mild, and sensitive with tendency to profuse, offensive foot sweats and perspiration in first stages of sleep. Soreness of inner nose and crusts on upper lip are good concomitants. Sulphur Itching of ears, which change to pain after scratching is one of the peculiar symptoms of Sulphur in ears. Accompanying itching, there may be acrid, offensive, sour-smelling discharges, which cause burning in the canal. Ears are very red. There is also ringing and roaring, evening, in ears with rush of blood to head. Sulphur is a good remedy in ear complications after the suppression of ottorhea Tellurium Otitis media with tympanic perforation is the prominent feature of this remedy in the ear. Tympanic membrane is irregular, thickened in some parts, thin in other portions. In the first stages, discharges are fair but afterwards they become offensive and smell like fish brine. Discharges are acrid and excoriating; whatever discharge touches become excoriated and little vesicles appear on excoriated surface. There may be vesicular eruption on membrane and then suppuration and perforation. There is itching, swelling and throbbing in meatus. Ears may become inflamed, bluish and puffy.
