Homeopathic Remedies in Ear Problems

by Dr. Ardavan Shahrdar, 2000

Aconitum napellus

Although there are not so many peculiar manifestations of this

remedy in ears, one should know the earache picture of Aconitum.

Auricle is red and hot. Meatus is inflamed, red and narrowed. There

is a severe painful sensitivity in meatus, so, apparently, it is not

possible to examine the ear easily by an otoscope. The earache has

come suddenly and violently often due to exposure to cold

dry wind. No suppuration is present. The most helpful symptoms in

diagnosing Aconitum in a patient are his or her mental and general

symptoms. The Aconitum patient is anxious, fearful and restless.

Pains are sharp and intolerable. They may lead to howling and

screaming. The patient is generally hot, dry and thirsty; usually

with an high grade fever. Rapid pulse and palpitation is almost

always present. The patient is worse at nights and from any external

influence such as emotions, music, noise, etc. Perspiration soothes

the situation.

Agaricus muscarius

Agaricus is famous in ear remedies because of its skin affections

and peculiar sensations in auricle. Agaricus is the best remedy for

chilblains, because in its proving the skin becomes red and inflamed

with burning and itching. Sensation of cold needles piercing the

skin, as if it is frozen, is one of the most important symptoms of

Agaricus. All these skin manifestations may be seen in auricle,

which is the indication for prescription of Agaricus whether they

are due to frostbite or not. As is seen, Agaricus is mostly an

external ear remedy.

Aurum metallicum

Aurum metallicum mostly affects middle ear, ossicula and mastoid

process. It is an important remedy in caries of ossicula and mastoid

process. It is also very useful in chronic suppurative otitis media

when symptoms agree. There is an obstinate fetid otorrhea, which may

fill the external meatus. The patient feels a burning, pricking

itching in ears. Hearing may be impaired. Aurum metallicum is a

remedy used in chronic cases. It is one of the important

antipsorics. The patient is generally sad and melancholic with full

of despair. His or her condition is aggravated at night and during

rest. He is better by motion and walking in open air. The patient is

oversensitive to noise but is ameliorated by music.

Belladonna

Although Belladonna can effect the whole ear, middle ear is affected

predominantly. Otitis media is one of its important manifestations.

There is a sudden onset of pain. The patient feels sharp, tearing,

stitching and shooting pains. There is a distressing throbbing and

beating pain, deep in ear, which is synchronous with heartbeat. The

tearing pains may extend downwards or from external ear to both

backward and forward to whole side of face. The tympanic

membrane is bulging with injected bloodvessels. Pain causes the

patient to become delirious. He may roll his head from side to side.

Child may cry out in sleep from earache. Generally the patient

radiates heat; especially in the upper part of the body. Face is hot

and red. Eyes are red with dilated pupils. There is a prominent

pulsation of carotids. Patient only sweats on covered parts and

there is an absence of thirst during fever. He is aggravated by

noise, touch, jar, motion and drafts and is better by rest.

Capsicum

This remedy has great effects on mastoid process and middle ear.

There is a severe inflammation in mastoid process, behind the ear.

Mastoid is swollen, painful and sensitive to touch. There are also

drawing and tearing pains with itching deep in ears. Pains extend to

throat. Ears are hot and red. Face is also red but cold to touch.

There may be a suppurative otitis media with perforation of tympanic

membrane. Ear discharges are thick and yellow. Eustachian tube

is also painful and dry. Generally the patient is chilly and his or

her condition is aggravated at nights, open air, uncovering and

drafts and is better by heat.

Chamomilla

In Chamomilla, there is a severe pain in whole ear region. However,

there is only a simple inflammatory condition rather than

suppuration. Pains are tearing and stitching and are worse by

stooping and external influences and better by warmth. During the

otitis, auricle is usually red and hot. Chamomilla is mostly seen in

children especially in dentition period. A Chamomilla patient is

very irritable, angry and nervous. He can not tolerate the pain,

which makes him anguish and angry. Pains extort crying. Child wants

to be carried all the time, which ameliorates him. There may be a

dull pressure and roaring in ears.

Chininum sulphuricum

Chininum sulphuricum is a famous tinnitus remedy. Therefore has

great use in Meniere’s disease. Ear may be full of different

noises; like buzzing, humming, ringing, roaring, rushing. There is

also a diminished power and impairment of hearing which may become

worse and worse to the degree of deafness. A whirling vertigo is

often present during tinnitus. Twitching of eyelids, throbbing

headache, difficult breathing and nausea may be other concomitants.

Ferrum phosphoricum

Ferrum phosphoricum is useful in first stages of inflammation but is

not as violent as Aconitum or Belladonna. Dilatation, hyperemia and

hemorrhage are common features of Ferrum phosphoricum. There is

redness of meatus and hyperemia of tympanic membrane. Dilatation of

bloodvessels causes dull, full feeling in head with pulsation felt

in both head and ears accompanied by a humming sound or dull roar.

Face is flushed and felt swollen. Although the patient may have

a high fever, there is a lack of accompanying symptoms. Sudden or

continued motion aggravates patient’s condition, especially the

beating and hammering of ears.

eruption of auricle and around it. Dryness is a common feature of

Graphites. Auricle and meatus are both dry; so dry that there are

deep cracks in them. Cracks are especially located behind and below

auricle. There is thick pus, which forms crust. Ears are swollen

with moist eczemas behind ears, which spread over cheeks and neck.

Hepar sulphuris

There is suppurative otitis media with discharge. Extreme

sensitiveness to contact, which is out of proportion to actual pain,

is a prominent feature. The patient is extremely sensitive.

Discharges are white, cheesy, bloody, offensive and long lasting

which irritates the skin where they touch. There are little

pustules in the meatus and auricle. Patient is irritable and bad-

tempered. He or she cannot tolerate anything cold and is ameliorated

by hot application. Patient is very chilly. Although there may be

profuse perspiration, no amelioration is followed by. Earache is

often associated with sore throat.

Kali bichromicum

Middle ear is generally affected in Kali bichromicum. There is a

suppurative otitis media. It is also useful in chronic cases.

Discharges are of thick, yellow, stringy, mucoid and foetid

character. Tympanic membrane is often ulcerated and perforated.

There are stinging from external meatus into internal ear,

and sharp stitching pains which dart from the ear to throat. There

is also a deep itching in ears. The patient may not be able to

exactly mention the location of pain. The situation is often

accompanied by discharges from nose, which are thick, stringy and

ropy. Patient generally is worse in cold, uncovering and

mornings and better by heat.

Kali sulphuricum

swelling may cause deafness. It can complete the action of

Pulsatilla when it fails to relieve permanently.

Lachesis

Although left-sided earache may occur, it is famous because of its

peculiar sensations. There is a roaring noise in ears which is

ameliorated by putting finger in ear. There are different noises

such as whizzing like insects, cracking, drumming and reverberation.

affected and suppurated. There is a profuse, thick, yellow, bloody

and very offensive discharge. There may be watery discharge and

hemorrhage from ears, too. Pains are mostly tearing, shooting and

stitching. There are different patterns of extension of pains. Pains

may extend from throat, teeth and different regions to ear. They may

extend from beneath ear to jaw or from left ear through head to

right ear and from there to left temple. Pains and discharges are

all aggravated at nights and from warmth, heat of the bed and lying

on left side. Deafness may occur which is relieved by blowing the

nose. Patient is weak, exhausted, sensitive and chilly. Profuse

cold perspiration may occur which not only does not cause

amelioration, but also aggravates the patient condition. He is both

aggravated by heat and chill; he is as easily chilled as overheated.

Petroleum

Skin affections are common in Petroleum. Skin of auricle is dry and

eczematous with intense itching and desquamation. Patient feels a

disagreeable dryness in ears too. There are also fissures in meatus.

Maxillary lymphatic glands may be swollen. All skin affections of

petroleum are dirty, hard, rough, thickened and aggravated in winter

and better in summer.

itching irritate the patient. Itching is intolerable and may cause

despair. The patient may feel the itching inside his ear, too. There

are also offensive discharges from eczematous eruptions. There is an

offensive odor from all over the body and from ears. When otorrhea

occurs, it is also offensive and purulent. Generally, the patient

looks unhealthy and dirty.

Pulsatilla

Both otitis externa and media may be seen in Pulsatilla. External

ear is hot, swollen and red. There is a sensation of plug, which

affects the hearing. When there is suppuration, discharges are

bland, inoffensive, yellow or yellowish green. Pains are aggravated

at evening and night. Open air and walking slowly, ameliorates the

patient. The patient is mild and tearful. She weeps pitifully.

General symptoms such as chilliness, intolerance of closed rooms,

shortness of breath, thirstlessness, changeability and emotional

picture help for diagnosing Pulsatilla.

Silica

Silica has prominent effects on ears. There is suppuration of middle

ear with perforation of tympanic membrane. Discharges are watery,

offensive and sour smelling. Scabs cover purulent discharges. Child

bores into its ears with fingers when asleep, causing a discharge of

pus and blood. Caries of mastoid is also another important symptom

of Silica. In this aspect, it follows well capsicum. Pains are

mostly stitching and from within without. Itching in Eustachian

tube is prominent. There is a feeling of sudden stoppage in ear,

which becomes better by yawning or swallowing. Patient is chilly,

mild, and sensitive with tendency to profuse, offensive foot sweats

and perspiration in first stages of sleep. Soreness of inner nose

and crusts on upper lip are good concomitants.

Sulphur

Itching of ears, which change to pain after scratching is one of the

peculiar symptoms of Sulphur in ears. Accompanying itching, there

may be acrid, offensive, sour-smelling discharges, which cause

burning in the canal. Ears are very red. There is also ringing and

roaring, evening, in ears with rush of blood to head. Sulphur is a

good remedy in ear complications after the suppression of

ottorhea

this remedy in the ear. Tympanic membrane is irregular, thickened in

some parts, thin in other portions. In the first stages, discharges

are fair but afterwards they become offensive and smell like fish

brine. Discharges are acrid and excoriating; whatever discharge

touches become excoriated and little vesicles appear on excoriated

surface. There may be vesicular eruption on membrane and then

suppuration and perforation. There is itching, swelling and

throbbing in meatus. Ears may become inflamed, bluish and puffy.
