WORTH REPEATING " Enamel is Affected by Bleaching " Over 4 years ago, this was

published in Dentistry Today " Long term alteration of enamel after vital tooth

bleaching does occur, according to an article by Norman Ritter, DDS, FAGD,

published in General Dentistry. "

The article details research done by Ritter, who suggests that dentists warn

patients about " ..its detrimental effect on tooth structure... "

If bleaching alters the enamel - makes it more porous - will this invite more

and greater staining in the future? The bleaching certainly doesn't make the

enamel more resistant to stain.

But consider where dental journals get their funds. Like Big Pharma

influences the medical journals, we feel dental products advertisers have strong

influence over dental publications. And the 'whitening' business is huge! They

follow the business policy of " find out what the customer wants, and sell it to

him! "

The research about which we commented happened 4 years ago. What's happened

since? Whitening, even in the dental office, has also often caused

sensitivities. That also says, " Something not nice is happening to these

teeth. "

We've heard DDSs questioned about bleaching teeth - and they tell us, " But

that's what they want! " You may remember our classifying DDSs as either

mechanics or gardeners [working with nature]. By what they do, they classify

themselves if you look for it.

We'd like to see the day when more DDSs are health oriented.doctors who are

" gardeners. " .
