Guest guest
Namaste Saul Depression is indeed a very serious condition, and the drug companies would very much like for us to believe that medication is THE most effective treatment. The good news is that clinical research suggests otherwise. Dozens of recent studies have shown various therapeutic interventions [including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)] to be at LEAST as effective as drug treatment interventions. Further, in long term studies, CBT patients show a significantly lower relapse rate than do drug therapy patients. For teenagers CBT is generally regarded as THE most effective treatment. By far. Of course, in the most severe depression cases, drug therapy does appear to aleviate depressive symptoms more quickly than therapy alone. The drugs DO work. Symptom relief generally lasts as long as the patient takes the medication. Most CBT patients, on the other hand, can be expected to maintain their positive mood long after therapy ceases. It's the old addage: Pills don't build Skills! CBT patients learn to manage their lives differently and to recognize subtle changes that might preceed a depressive episode. Growth occurs. Quality of life improves. Balance and Health improve. All of the above tend to lessen the risk of another depresive episode and future need for drugs. Dependence is on skills. Empowerment belongs to the self. Under the alopathic system, dependence in on the drug. Empowerment belongs to the drug company ... along with several hundred dollars per year! Of course, in this country, the choice is between " here, do this difficult work ... " and " here, take this easy little pill ... " Anyone care to guess which one is more popular? Guest guest
Also - another question to ask yourself about depression is - " is depression caused by a lack of a drug in my system? " You can ask yourself that question no matter what the dis-ease is. I'm sure the only answer would be no. Dig deeper to find the cause of the depression (or the arthritis, or the heartburn, or the cancer, etc.) - and go to the root of the problem - Carol Dan [stewarda] Depression is indeed a very serious condition, and the drug companies would very much like for us to believe that medication is THE most effective treatment.
