Paul McCartney and Elton John lead Celebrity Protest Over Threat to Natural

Health Products!

 

Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John have joined over 40 high profile

figures in demanding Government action to prevent the destruction of the

natural health industry in the UK.

 

Sir Paul McCartney recently wrote to friends and colleagues saying: " I

believe that we have a right to buy safe, legitimate and natural health food

supplements. This right is under threat and I am pleased to lend my name to

a campaign that may become necessary to preserve our freedom of choice in

Other celebrities including Marcus Trescothick, Zoe ll, Sir Cliff Richard,

Jools Holland, Simon le Bon and Julia Mackenzie are supporting the 'Save

our Supplements' campaign, which hopes to prevent hundreds of safe and

popular vitamins, minerals and herbal products from being wiped from the

shelves of UK stores by new European legislation.

 

The celebrities are urging all consumers who use popular products such as

Vitamin C, Echinacea, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid and Multi-Vitamins to write to

the Government demanding that it acts to prevent the products being banned.

 

The EU Food Supplements Directive was introduced into UK law on 3rd July

2003. Now the only hope of overturning this legislation is to support the

UK's Alliance for Natural Health who are mounting a legal challenge this

month, September 2003.

The EU Food Supplements Directive contains a list of permitted nutrients and

nutrient sources that may be used in supplements. The list is woefully

inadequate and fails to reflect the existing UK market. At present over 300

safe and popular nutrients and nutrient sources on sale in the UK are not on

the permitted list and unless extensive assessments are undertaken for each,

they will be removed from sale.

 

The Directive will lay down the maximum permitted dose levels of vitamins

and minerals for each person. Political pressure from Germany and France is

expected to result

in these levels being set well below those currently available in UK, and

substantially below the levels that scientists confirm are safe. The result

is that consumers will be prevented from purchasing the safe and beneficial

high doses from shops as they do now, forcing them to buy from unregulated

markets such as the internet or overseas mail order.

 

The move, which aims to promote free trade, will hit the natural health

industries in the UK and Holland particularly hard, as consumers in these

countries purchase more natural health products than in other European

countries. There is concern as well that the proposals take no account of

the safety record of these products and fail to recognise the difference in

diets, lifestyle and nutritional needs of people across Europe.

 

Therefore in England and throughout Europe over 300 safe and popular

nutrients and nutrient sources in the UK will be removed from sale. A

separate Directive on traditional herbal medicinal products is being

introduced. This will have a devastating effect on nearly all herbal

supplements currently on the UK market. To remain on sale, a product must

have been on the market for 30 years (15 years in Europe) and licensed in

the same way as pharmaceutical drugs or vaccines. The likely effect is the

collapse of the specialist supplements market including most independent

producers and retailers of herbal products.

 

The independent consumer group Consumers for Health Choice (CHC) in

conjunction with the National Association of Health Stores (NAHS) has

launched the nationwide Save Our Supplements campaign.

 

Two million leaflets explaining the issue are being distributed to

consumers, and the groups aim to collect more than 1 million petition

signatures to present to MPs and Ministers. Many health analysts believe

that the withdrawal of these products is likely to lead to a dramatic

increase in the number of visits to GP surgeries as millions of consumers

become unable to purchase the natural remedies they currently use. This

agenda is being driven primarily by the pharmaceutical industry!

 

Sue Croft, Director of Consumers for Health Choice said: " It is a tremendous

boost to our campaign to have these high profile figures, including Sir Paul

In Australia, in response to the PAN fiasco, the TGA (Therapeutic Goods

Administration) have convened a committee of 18 members mostly drawn from

TGA, government, medical and pharmaceutical industry representatives.

Complementary healthcare groups are largely unrepresented. This appears to

defy logic. This committee will release their new initiatives for the

Australian health industry on September 26th.These initiatives will surely

be more restrictive and possibly aligned with the pharmaceutical directives

of Europe and the EU. One of the key members of this committee is a

Professor Alistair McLennan. Mr McLennan is famous for his comment: " We

shouldn't support the complementary medicine (industry) or subsidise it.

It's a bit like subsidising the tobacco industry or the gambling industry. "

Will this committee be unbiased?

 

 

In the US, the Senate has re-tabled the Dietary Supplement Health and

Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994 because of an event similar to Australia's PAN

pharmaceutical (Travel Calm) debacle.Coincidence? In the US, the herbal

supplement ephedra is being used as a scapegoat similar to Travel Calm in

Australia.

 

A new US Senate bill, the " Dietary Supplement Safety Act, " has been

introduced. If passed, this bill would amend DSHEA so that the FDA could

arbitrarily ban access to dietary supplements. In addition, the bill would

subject safe and effective natural therapies to approval

standards more stringent than those for pharmaceutical drugs.

What about Canada? On July 15, about twenty armed officers and Health Canada

officials raided the offices of Truehope Nutritional Support, charging that

the company has been selling a nutritional supplement to the mentally ill

without government approval. The RCMP

demanded that employees immediately stop working and back away from their

computers. They proceeded to download company information from hard drives

while confiscating stacks of documents.

 

The supplement in question, Empowerplus, a combination of 36 vitamins,

minerals and anti-oxidants, has a successful track record in treating

symptoms of mental illness. Health Canada states that, under new Canadian

law, making health claims classifies a supplement as a drug and therefore

requires solid, scientific proof of effectiveness before it can be legally

sold.

 

Meanwhile, without any scientific evidence of safety or effectiveness,

Health Canada has approved a plan to distribute marijuana through Medical

Doctors. This week Minister Anne McLellan stated that if medical marijuana

proved not to work she'll shut down the program. Yet, Health Canada

has already moved to shut down the $544,000 study of Empowerplus being

conducted at the University of Calgary, despite early evidence of

effectiveness. What's wrong with this picture?

 

 

Why is this happening? Global regulation!

 

Codex Alimentarius, in simple terms, is a code of law for food. What it

actually means to each and every one of us is a threat to our health and the

health of every human being on this planet.

 

The future availability and legal status of herbs, vitamins, amino acids,

minerals and all other supplements in the U.S. and throughout the world, may

be determined by a committee made up of 146 nations called the Codex

Alimentarius Commission, which operates in conjunction with the

United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO).

 

It is under the guise of protecting public safety through the

standardization of food and botanical codes that the commission has become a

tool of the international pharmaceutical industry that is intent on making
