I found this in the Aug. 2003 issue of Vegetarian Times:

 

Exposure to a dog in the first year of life seems to strengthen a

baby's immune system, according to a study presented at a March 2003

American Acadmey of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology meeting. Only 19

percent of infants exposed to dogs developed allergies later in

life, compared to 33 percent of those not exposed to dogs.
