Herbs & Nutrients for Diabetics

Effects of Bitter Melon on Diabetes

Medical Abstract Title:

Natural Products Used for Diabetes.

Author:

Shapiro K, Gong WC

Source:

J Am Pharm Assoc (Wash). 2002;42(2):217-226.

Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To review the efficacy and safety of natural products

commonly used for diabetes.

DATA SOURCES: English and Spanish-language journals retrieved through a MEDLINE

search of articles published between 1960 and December 2001 using these index

terms: Opuntia, karela, gymnema, tecoma, alpha lipoic acid, thioctic acid,

ginseng, panaxans, and diabetes.

DATA SYNTHESIS: Natural products have long been used in traditional

systems of medicine for diabetes. Products in common use include nopal (prickly

pear cactus), fenu-greek, karela (bitter melon), gymnema,

tronadora, chromium, and alpha-lipoic acid. The popularity of

these products varies among people of different ethnicities. Nopal is

the most commonly used herbal hypoglycemic among persons of Mexican descent.

Karela is more commonly used by persons from Asian countries. Some of these

agents have gained universal appeal. For a select number of products, studies

have revealed single or multiple mechanisms of action. For several of these,

high soluble fiber content is a contributing factor.

CONCLUSION: Based on the available evidence, several natural products in common

use can lower blood glucose in patients with diabetes. Commonly used natural

products often have a long history of traditional use, and pharmacists who have

a stronger understanding of these products are better positioned to counsel

patients on their appropriate use.

I'm not an herbalist, per se, but I have some personal experience on

this...

I'm a Type 2 Diabetic that keeps my sugar level COMPLETELY UNDER

CONTROL using products that are synergistically blended and designed by

DAVID WINSTON, Founder of the National Herbalists' Guild.

The blend of herbs & nutrients in these products (glucomannan, alpha

lipoic acid, gymnema, chromium, n-acetyl-cysteine, ginsens, co-enzyme

Q10...JUST TO NAME A FEW) are ESSENTIAL to controlling diabetes.

There is HOPE!!! You just have to EDUCATE yourself with ACCURATE, NON-

HYPE and NON-PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY information to make good choices.

Thank you Misty....

I don't follow any exact diet, however, just for common sense sake, I have

lowered my

bad carbs quite a bit. I eat (and love) sandwiches, so I've switched to

Nature's Own

Reduced Carbohydrate bread (WHOLE GRAIN and only 5 carbs per slice). Bryan and

I

have also switched from potato chips and such to fresh veggies. We keep raw

broccoli, peppers and tomatoes in the house so it's convenient to have them with

a

sandwich or burger.

I've FINALLY broken my addiction to Diet Coke and now I only drink water,

lemonade

and unsweetened fruit juices.

I take a product called " Fat Free " made by STARLIGHT INTERNATIONAL anytime (and

everytime) I eat pastas, potatoes, etc. My physician is VERY pleased with my

progress.

My sugar levels have dropped from 207 to 132. My hemoglobin A1C count has gone

from 9.0 to 7.7. My blood pressure has dropped from 142/90 to 120/72!!!! And

my

cholesterol has gone from 242 to 163.

So, OBVIOUSLY, what I'm doing is working, because ALL the test results prove it

and I

AM THRILLED!!!

I hope I answered your question....are you diabetic too??????

You need to get off of all Wheat products. Switch to an ezekiel

bread(spelling) or a spelt bread...get off all of the processed flour

products and that includes the midnight snacks. Shop at organic health food

stores and by non processed cereals like amarath flakes, millet flakes,

spelt flakes....

God Bless

Shawn, I'm avoiding all grains except for occassional ezekiel bread and some

rice/pecan crackers. Both I get at the HFS. Also organic if affordable -

love veggies. I'm looking into ordering some grass fed meat, too. GBU2,
