Guest guest
Can you give me any concrete suggestions about what I can do? I'm leaving town shortly and have little time, but would certainly make a call or send an email, and also pass this on. Thanks, Karen
Guest guest
Hi All ~ I am cross posting here... Evonne _______________________ Hi: Need help ASAP on this matter, a dog's life hangs in the balance. Not just any dog though, a dog named Fluffy who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and is now being denied transport to the US. His trainer and handler SPC Russel W. Joyce is begging for help to get Fluffy out of Iraq. I spoke to him on the phone this morning, he's obviously a very caring person otherwise he'd just throw up his arms and say " oh well... I tried " . The chances of that happening rank up there with donkeys flying. Russel feels Fluffy served his country and with great courage even in the face of danger and while in pain. Fluffy deserves to come to the US and be awarded the respect he earned and is due as a soldier. He did what was asked of him and with very little training time I might add. He has was procured IN Iraq where dogs are considered dirty and are used only for guarding and herding. Fluffy was emaciated when he was brought to SFC Joyce, on top of that he had clearly been abused. Fluffy was missing a couple lower teeth, as well as a broken canine. (very painful for those of you whove never had a broken tooth with the root exposed). Fluffy did his job in spite of his painful teeth, he is no less deserving of being allowed entry to the US because he was born on Iraqi soil. And he certainly has every right to be treated with kindness and the respect due a member of the US military. Please if there is anything you can do, now is the time. Remember how we were all appalled at the US military dogs left behind in previous wars, Korea, Nam, to name a few. This is a travesty and we need to make it right. CC - RWCMJ ThunderWolf Monday, May 12, 2003 8:57 AM From Russell Joyce RE: " Fluffy " To everyone concerned, First of all, let me thank you all for your support, it has been so much more than I had ever expected. The approving authority is Air Movement Command at Scott Air Force Base. I don't know the name of the guy that needs contacted but he is the boss of CPT Cash the guy in Iraq that could release the dog for travel. Their DSN number is prefix 318 460-0006. This is a special military number for Iraq and can't just be dialed from any phone. This is the only other contact that I have at this present time. The men that are disapproving of letting the dog get on a plane to the states are CPT Cash, MSG Perry, and SMGT Heasley. Their number is DSN prefix 318 460-0038. The civilian that I spoke with that is in charge at Scott Air Force Base is Cindy Nothenbauch. I do not know the prefix to this DSN number, but it is 779-4592. Please understand that these are all military people and should be shown the respect that they deserve. These are military soldiers but they just don't have the same feelings about this issue that we do. They see the dog as a pet not as I do as a fellow comrade. The dog is currently with the 506 Security Force Squadron, which is a dog handling team in Kirkuk. Millions of thanks need to be given to the following 2 individuals, SSGT Darren Johnson and SSGT Chris Falvey for caring for the dog after I left the country and all of their support during the time that I was in Iraq (food, leash, veterinary care, etc). Their emails are Darren.Johnson and Christopher.Falvey. No matter what happens to the dog that I call " Fluffy " , I would like to encourage support for the dog teams that supported me during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The number one guy that helped was Darren Johnson and his address, to show your support, for him and his dog teams are: (Fluffy is with these dog teams) SSGT Darren Johnson 506 Security Forces Sq Kirkuk Air Base, Iraq APO AE 09347 Thanks again, Russell Joyce Below is the original post that SFC Russel W Joyce sent out asking for help. I have just returned from Iraq today. While in Iraq, my team requested a dog for operational purposes. The Kurds brought us a German Shepard breed that had obviously been abused and neglected by the Iraqi military. I became the handler for this dog and grew very attached to him. This dog was used in many combat operations in Northern Iraq and proved to be a wonderful " soldier. " It was my team that took control over the mountain north of Mosul (Maclube mountain). Anyway, I obtained all of the proper paperwork to have the dog shipped to the US so that I could adopt it but at the last minute there was some problem with politics. The dog meets all requirements to be shipped to the US. I only have 72 hours to find some way to get the dog released for travel and cut through this red tape or the dog will be destroyed. I have personally trained this dog for special military use and now the dog does not like Kurds or Iraqi persons, therefore, they will not be able to handle him. All I need is some help in getting this animal here to the states, I will handle all of the expenses that it takes to get him here. I have a copy of all medical records, vaccinations, and orders for the dog. I can send a copy of this paperwork to anyone that can help me. I am a prior Ranger and currently a Special Forces soldier and our motto is " Never leave a fallen comrade " . The military asked for this dog to serve, this dog lived through 2 shootings, mine fields, and all military actions in the North. Now, they are ready to discard him, I can't let that happen and I'm hoping that he can live his retirement with me here in the US. Please contact me if you can help or know of anyone who can. My 72 hours started on May 11 at 12 noon. Thank you again, SFC Russell W.
