Guest guest
Hi everyone, Here is a short and easy guide for homeopathic remedies that are useful in winter colds. Homeopathy can sometimes get tricky though, so if you want a little additional help, don't be shy. Post a question here so we can all learn together. Be Well, Misty http://www..com Homeopathic Guide for Winter Colds By Misty L. Trepke Winter colds. It is said the average person will get an acute illness twice a year. Most often, at least one of those illnesses will occur during the winter. Here are some simple guidelines for using homeopathic remedies to speed recovery and make the experience less miserable. Aconitum Napelus- This remedy is for colds or coughs that come on suddenly, especially after a cold, dry, wind or becoming chilled. Also useful for symptoms that come on after experiencing a fright or shock. This remedy will work only within the first 24 hr to 48 hours of an acute illness. The person may be quite anxious, fearful or despairing. Allium Cepa- Made from red onion, it is not hard to imagine the type of burning, streaming nasal drip that is indicated by this remedy. This will be useful in colds and hayfever. The discharge from the nose will burn, but the tears from the eyes won't. (Euphrasia is indicated in the exact opposite symptom picture.) Interestingly, the nasal discharge may be one sided, for example, only one nostril may stream at a time. Often times the person will be better fresh air and worse in stuffy rooms. Antimonium Tart- This remedy is indicated when there is a loud rattling cough. The breathing can be asthmatic, difficult, fast and rattling. It will be difficult to expectorate. This is a very noted remedy for chest complaints including pneumonia, bronchitis and whooping cough. Arsenicum Alb- One of the best remedies available for when a person is weak and exhausted. The symptom picture can include a burning nasal discharge that makes the area under the nostrils red and sore. Additionally there can be a cough that is described as exhausting, hacking and/or loose. The breathing can be difficult, fast, and/or wheezing. The patient will want to lie down propped up with lots of pillows. Symptoms seem to worsen between 1-2 am. Interestingly, despite burning pains the patient will crave warmth. Baptisia- This is a very good remedy for the flu. The body will feel bruised and the muscles will feel heavy, sore and/or stiff. The patient may even curl up tightly in bed to get some relief from the pain, but the bed feels too hard (similar to Arnica) and the part of body lain on feels sore and bruised. Belladonna- This is another sudden and violent onset remedy, usually associated with a high fever and a red face. Delirium is not unheard of. There can be a cough that is barking, raw and exhausting. Headaches, sore throats and earaches are also possible. The pains may be throbbing, raw and/or bursting in nature. The patient can radiate heat, especially from the head. Bryonia- This is another excellent remedy for chest complaints. One of the most important keynotes is the worsening of symptoms, even from the slightest of movements. There can also be pronounced exhaustion and irritability. Calcarea Phosphorica and/or Carbo Vegetabilis- These remedies are for recovering from serious illnesses, to rebuild the strength. Gelsemium Sempervirens- This is a flu remedy par excellence. There will be much exhaustion and pain in the muscles, the arms and legs will often feel achy and too heavy. The onset is generally slow. Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum- This is a wonderful remedy for sore throats, especially those that have sticking pain and/or radiate to the ear. Symptoms such as a cough or sore throat can be worse for uncovering. Kali Bichromium- This is an excellent remedy for thick, ropy, often times greenish discharge that can come from the nose or the chest. Natrum Muriaticum- This is good for colds that start with sneezing. There can be a clear and watery, or thick white nasal discharge. The patient may sneeze violently and can be depressed. Nux Vomica- Another good remedy for the early stages of an acute flu. There can be general body aches and pains, particularly in the back, the cough can be violent, and the patient craves heat yet shivers and can't get warm, even turning in bed may cause violent chills. The person may also be very irritable, impatient and sensitive to light and noise. Phosphorus- This is a wonderful remedy when there is an oppression or constrictive feeling about the chest. The voice may also be hoarse. Pulsatilla- A great remedy for colds accompanied by thick yellow or yellow-green mucus. The nose can be stopped up when indoors, but runny in open air. The patient may be moody and whiny and feels better in open air. There can be a strong desire for company. Rhus Toxicodendron- This remedy is indicated in flues with progressing fever and increasing aches. An important keynote is the pain is often made worse by initial movement, but feels better with continued movement, much like a rusty gate. Spongia Tosta- A marked remedy for croup and painful, barking, choking coughs which occur day and night. The cough can sound like sawing wood and there can be an immense fear of suffocation, with a feeling of a plug in the throat. In addition to remedies it is important to give the body time to rest and heal. We can be tempted to " keep on keeping on " but the resistance had to be low (in homeopathy-speak the susceptibility had to be high) to get sick in the first place. Honor this. Rest, keep warm, sip ginger tea and allow the body time to heal.
