Remedy of the Week- Aconite

drawn in part from Miranda Castro's " The Complete Homeopathy

Handbook "

Aconitum Napellus, also known in herbal circles as monk's-hood or

wolf's-bane, was used by the ancient Greeks, and has in fact been

used through out history as a deadly poison.

Good poisons make good remedies. In homeopathy we recognize that a

substance which has the power to kill, when applied homeopathically,

will have the power to heal. And this can easily be verified by

personal experience with homeopathic Aconite.

This is a great remedy to keep on hand, and is indicated when

symptoms appear after getting chilled (especially with sudden onset)

or after suffering from a fright or shock. (After hearing of 9/11

while I was traveling in Italy, I headed straight for my traveler's

first aid kit and started taking aconite. The difference it made

was noticeable immediately.)

This remedy only works at the very beginning of an illness, say the

first 24-48 hours. Aconite is also indicated when there are pains,

such as in the head, throat, teeth or elsewhere, and they are

intolerable, driving the person to despair. People requiring

aconite will also tend to be worse at night, though they are usually

OK on going to bed, they wake up around midnight, or shortly before,

with their particular symptoms such as a cough, croup, earache,

etc. They usually will not want to be touched and can be quite

anxious.

Aconite is nearly always accompanied with some sort of shock or

anxiousness. A person needing aconite can be very distressed,

fearful, and possibly well beyond being consoled.

Key points of aconite to remember:

• Sudden onset

• Symptoms can come on after being chilled or a fright/shock

• Can be very anxious, fearful (or in a state of shock)

• Only useful during first 24-48 hours of an illness.

• Good remedy to include in a first aid kit.
