I have not read the related articles yet, I will look at them, but the real question is what is their motive for doing so? I personally wish there was a tad more regulation with the " non- pharmaceutical alternatives " here in the US. The fact of the matter is that if you are selling a " non-drug " in the US you can claim it does darn near anything with no actual proof and sell it at any price and there is almost nothing from stopping you. One could probably go to Walgreens, buy some of their discount vitamins and stuff, crush them up and put them in a capsule, and sell them for $100 for a monthly supply as weight loss aid, impotency aid, grow hair aid, etc. I think this act of preying on the insecurities of people is tragic and criminal, but very little can be done. Guest guest
Hi Kevin... Those are very good questions... First of all- if you are concerned about the quality of your vitamins, minerals, herbs, ect. only buy from reputable distributors such as health food stores or other sources that you know and trust. Personally, I even distrust supplements sold at: Walmart, Walgreens, K-Mart, ect., because of their shoddy quality- lots of binders and fillers are often used in those products... Now there are other sources that I know of on the net that sell very good products- but as with anything else, take the time to feel the company out... Once you get a good feel then try the product- if you do not notice results- stop taking them and seriously consider if you want to buy future products from them... So the buyer does need to be aware- but to me that is infinitely better than putting the fox in charge of the hen house. You asked the motivation behind the EU legislation. In one of the links it is reported that this whole concept was created at a European Pharmaceutical Commitee meeting... Conflict of interest? Natural remedies and supplements have become a fast growing and expanding market- millions of dollars are spent on these products every year... Money that the pharmaceutical companies have been missing out on... We have become so trained to seek out authorities to tell us what is good for us- but what if those authorities are more interested in their own agendas then our health and well-being?... Do you know how long Prozac was studied before it was released on the market? 4 MONTHS! It is one of the most- if not the most- prescribed drug in America- it was unleashed on the public with precious little research and understanding of its repercussions from use- and NO understanding of its long term use- a study that still has yet to be conducted!... Unlike natural remedies such as herbs and homeopathics, ect. which have long documented histories of safe, effective use when used with common sense... As for being able to sell almost anything- we live in a very skeptical time... Reputable manufactures of alternative remedies have to strive very hard to prove the efficacy of their products while being in the double bind position of not being allowed to make health claims. When I was working in a health store we were in the difficult position of not being able to make health claims while at the same time explaining what the different products could be used for... For instance- I could say that Essiac tea is often used by people with cancer but I was NEVER allowed to say that Essiac tea addresses cancer... I have even heard of alternative manufacturers having problems with the names of their products- such as Liver Detox- apparently even that would be too much of a health claim... I agree it is criminal and immoral to prey on the fears of those who are ill and worse- through instilling even more fear not allowing them to explore their options... I went to the medical clinic with a friend who was recently diagnosed with a deadly disease... I witnessed the Doctors put the fear of God into my friend should he deviate at all from the course of action that they prescribed- a concoction of very toxic drugs- so toxic that they kill off all new cellular growth... And watching the Doctors literally roll their eyes when he mentioned searching for non-toxic alternative therapies... I heard it said once that if there was really something to all these alternative health products, that medical doctor would tell their patients about them... While there are medical doctors that are truly dedicated to their patients well-being- (look for my link to Dr. Stoll)- I use this analogy... When was the last time you heard Honda recommend Ford? By regulating the alternative health field- medical agents/pharmaceutical companies are wiping out their " competition " ... Control through assimilation... And in the process eliminating our natural right to freedom of choice in health care... I would rather maintain the ability to make my own health choices/decisions and chose my source for health supplements/care than put those decisions into the hands of those who may not have my health interests in mind...
