Guest guest
Through the course of a day, seeing and speaking with many people searching for health and well being, different questions, situations and challenges arise needing to be solved. And sometimes these bumps in the road offer little gems of wisdom. So that these little nuggets of self-help insight may help a larger number of people, I am creating a file entitled, " Little Gems " . Do you have gems that you would like to share with the rest of us? Please post them here so we all can learn together… Ron, this is dedicated to you... One of the best possible natural aids for anemia is wheatgrass juice. Yes, it is literally the juice from wheat sprouts. Before trying to grow this at home for yourself (which is actually very easy once you know how to do it) I highly recommend going to Wild Oats or some other natural market and have them make the juice fresh for you at the deli counter. Unfortunately, this juice does not keep longer than 10 minutes because of the process of oxidation, so it needs to be prepared fresh everytime. One ounce of this juice is the equivalent of 2 ½ pounds of garden vegetables! Very potent, nutritious stuff. Now lets talk about why it is good for anemia. Chlorophyll, the pigment that makes plants green, is very similar to hemoglobin, the stuff that makes up red blood cells. So not only will the chlorophyll help transport more oxygen in the body (part of the responsibility of hemoglobin) which also provides energy throughout the body, it is also thought that it will actually help the body in rebuilding its hemoglobin supply. Anemics may also need more iron. Wheatgrass, if grown on proper soil, should help in this department but supplementation may still be needed. But my number one recommendation about wheatgrass juice is this… Never, ever, ever drink it straight! It can taste quite horrible. Unfortunate but true. I have seen where people were all excited about this new discovery so they ran to get their first dose of wheatgrass juice, and against my advice, they take a straight " shot " . Then end result- it may have done them good, but they will never drink it again… As die hard of a fan of wheatgrass juice as I am, I will not and can not drink it straight… The taste is just incredibly super sweet… I always take it in a mixed drink. Wild Oats offers just such a combination- an apple grass cooler. The added apple juice, ice and lime makes it much more palatable. And while there are many dedicated wheatgrass drinkers that say it does not do the body as much good if it is mixed with other juices, my philosophy is that the juice will do no good what-so-ever if people refuse to drink it… Take my advice, don't try to be a superhero. Good luck Ron, and let me know how it goes… Misty.
