Likes and Dislikes

Likes (Attachment, Raag) and Dislikes (Aversion, Dvesh)

Likes (Attachment, Love, Passion, Raag) and Dislikes (Aversion,

Hatred, Dvesh) are incoming, transient, alterations of the inner

faculty, they are not one's natural tendencies (dharma). Dharma

remains firm and stable, whereas changes are temporary, i.e. they are

the kind that come and go. As love (likes) and hatred (dislikes) are

intermittent conditions that come and go in the inner faculty (mind,

intellect, ego), they can be wiped out.

An aspirant's activity or abscence of activity should not be

influenced by likes (passion) and dislikes (hatred), rather they must

be in accordance with the scriptures.

The outcome of actions undertaken under the influence of likes

(attraction) and dislikes (aversion) is not very good.

When there is a feeling of dislike (hatred) for another aspirant, it

becomes an impediment in one's own spiritual progress.

Discrimination is eternal, whereas likes (attractions, attachments)

are self created. When there is attraction for the world, one's

discrimination is curbed, but when discrimination is awakened,

attachment goes away.

On considering the ever-changing world as permanent, that itself,

causes the rise of duality of attraction (likes) and hatred (dislikes).

In whatever we develop an attachment (like, attraction), in that we do

not find any faults or flaws, and in whatever we develop aversion

(hatred), in that we do not see any good qualities. It is only on

being free of likes and dislikes, that we are able to see the true

nature of a thing.

In reality, everything is divine, but because of likes and dislikes,

it appears as inert. If likes and dislikes were absent, then besides

divinity there is nothing else existing.
