VOICE OF THE RISHIS: 102

COURTESY SHRI RAPARLA JANARADHANA RAO

" STHIRA SUKHA MAASANAM "

--PATANJALI YOGA SUTRA

Patanjali Maharshi in this `Sutra' or principle states that the yogi

should continue to sit in a way that makes him to sit longer and

with ease and comfort.

Here the sitting posture is defined to possess two aspects to be

able to continue to sit along, and it sit with comfort. Some Yogis

advocates people to sit in Padmasana while some in Veerasana etc.

But Patanjali Maharshi here broadens the concept and makes things

easier to the practitioner of yoga. He need not sit for long in an

uncomfortable position by force. It is enough if the position

selected, allows him to sit for long and with comfort to sit on.

" Sthira " and " Sukha " are the two characteristics that are imposed

upon. Yoga, it should be noted, is a great science with life

principles discovered by the sages of yore by constant practice with

devotion and dedication and strangely based on, no other external

material devices or appliances but the inner eye, or intuition. It

is indeed amazing how they understand the central nervous system,

the spinal cord twisting and its secrets of Shatchakra located in

the spinal cord the flow of breath and its regulation, leading to

the fund of great knowledge Pranayama in Yoga.

For all these practices with the potentialities and the treasures

hidden a regular posture of sitting (Asana) is essential. And this

should be as Maharshi Patanjali states should be " Sthira and Sukha " ,

steady and comfortability. It may be noted no yogic exercise should

be violent.
