SRI RAMANA PROVIDES INSTANT REALISATION TO TWO FOREIGN VISITORS, ON

THEIR INSISTANCE

The first anecdote is from A Sadhu's Reminiscences by Major Chadwick

and the second from My Reminiscences by Balarama Reddy. Both the

books are available at the Kendram's bookstore.

The Taylors, an American couple, came to the Ashram. Taylor was a

retired post-master. They became much attached to Bhagavan. One

day, Mrs.Taylor suddenly said in the Hall: `Bhagavan, I want Self-

realisation'. `Wait', replied Bhagavan, `it will come in due

time'. `No', she answered, `that is no good. I want it here and

now'. Bhagavan tried to explain to her that when she was ready

everything would work out all right. But she insisted. She must

have it here and now and it was up to him to give it to her.

Bhagavan said nothing but gazed at her steadily in the eyes for some

minutes or so. She suddenly burst into tears and rushed out of the

Hall, but would never tell anybody what had happened.

Once the private secretary to the Governor of Pondicherry came to

the Ashram with a long list of questions written in an elaborate,

complex style of French. Handing over the paper to Sri Bhagavan, he

sat on the windowsill opposite the couch. Finding that the

questions were in French, Bhagavan asked me to translate them.

[Earlier to settling in Sri Ramnasramam, Balarama Reddy had lived

for many years in Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, where he had

picked up French.]

As I was struggling with word-by-word translation and was finding

the French difficult to translate, Sri Bhagavan said: `That's not

necessary, just tell me the gist'. I scanned the questions and told

Sri Bhagavan that he really didn't want oral answers but rather in

the form of an experience. Sri Bhagavan paused for a moment, and

then slowly turned his face in the direction of the questioner and

rested eyes on him. After about 30 seconds, I noticed the man's

body trembling and shaking all over. Then be blurted out, `Oh no,

Bhagavan, not now! Please Bhagavan, not now!' I was standing to the

side of Bhagavan, watching this extraordinary scene and wondering

what a being this Bhagavan was!I
