Namaste - Reet ---------- Nine to tie the knot on Sai Baba’s birthday THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nine marriages, including that of a blind couple, will be the highlight of the 83rd birthday celebrations of Sri Sathya Sai Baba on Sunday at Sai Gramam, Thonnakkal. The Sri Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust is organising mass marriage for the seventh year in a row to celebrate the birthday of the Baba. ‘’So far, we have conducted 75 marriages. All the couples were from poor background,’’ said K.N.Anandakumar, executive director of the Trust. Like the previous year, majority of the prospective couples selected this year are also from the Tsunami-hit Alappad coast. Couples from Perumathura and Vellanad in Thiruvananthapuram will also get married in the ceremony. ‘’This year, the first application we received was from a blind bride and groom from Vellanad. True to the ideals of Baba, we are conducting Hindu, Muslim and Christian marriages this year,’’ said Anandakumar. The Trust will give five-sovereign-gold ornaments and three pairs of dresses to all brides and a new watch and a pair of dress to the bridegrooms. A gift box comprising home appliances will also be presented. Beauty treatment will also be provided to the brides. Around 2,000 people are expected to witness the mass-marriage and bless the couples. The ceremony is planned with great pomp and splendour. Sumptuous feast, ‘nagaswaram’ recital and floral decorations will be part of the celebrations. Transport Minister Mathew T.Thomas will be the chief guest of the ceremony to be held at 4 p.m. Trust chairman and Upa Lokayukta Justice N.Krishnan Nair will preside over the function. A music concert led by Idea Star Singer fame Thushar will take place at 2 p.m. The concluding ceremony of the birthday celebrations will be inaugurated by Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran at 6 p.m. Trust Advisory Committee chairman D.Babu Paul will preside over the function. A music evening led by renowned playback singer S.P.Balasubrahmanyam will follow. On Saturday, an elocution competition for college students will be held at the Sai Gramam on ‘role of spirituality in Indian culture’.
