Guest guest
When I see RELIGION on an application form, I write HINDU, but as I'm thinking about it now, I'm as much a Hindu, as I'm a Christian, or a Buddhist, in the sense that I don't practice Hinduism, I don't practice any religion; but like a sparrow, I pick up bits and pieces from the different religions, and saints and avatars, and weave them together to make my nest, my religion that is comfortable for me.. I follow Swami, who was born a Hindu, but he transcends every religion. My role models are Adi Shankara and Mira, but I to their ideas and their ideals, not their religion. I can relate to the Native Americans' bond with nature, because I feel the same connection with Mother Nature - she nourishes me and teaches me life lessons. I loved to celebrate Sankranti at Ammamma's [my grandmother's] house when I was a child, but I celebrate Christmas with much the same vigor now. I long for the ecstasies that Sufi saints like Rumi went into, but I also crave for the peace and poise that Buddha achieved. I admire Jesus and Shirdi Baba for their confidence and strength to stand in the face of every opposition, and teach what they came to teach - love. Not teach as in stand on a pulpit and preach, but teach by doing, teach by their actions, teach by being the path themselves. Religion is a bridge that leads to God, it is a pointer pointing to God. When people make religion their God, it ceases to be religion, it becomes all about ego and power and self righteousness. It is God that religion must be about, not itself. But when I have God himself, Swami himself who is God, then what do I need religion for? He teaches me to follow Sathya (truth), Dharma (right conduct), Shanti (peace), Prema (love), Ahimsa (non-violence) - the religion of Humanity. Swami is the bridge and the destination. He is my God and my religion. By his profound statement "My life is my message", he made himself the path, he is the way. There is no way I can go down a wrong path if I accept his message and make it my way, my religion.
