Darkness is a necessary part of growth. It usually involves confusion, pain, uncertainty, fear, struggle, change, obstacles. Human instinct is to naturally resist and fight them. But if I want to grow, darkness is about nurturing growth. If I'm willing to go into the tunnel, without resisting to stay at the entrance, the deeper I go, the more I mine, as long as I have faith that there is light at the other end of the tunnel. Before being born, I was in the darkness of a womb - completely at the mercy of God to take care of me. A caterpillar wrapped up painfully tight in its chrysalis comes out as a butterfly. A seed planted and covered up in the dark earth comes out as a new green shoot.

Darkness can be scary at first, when I enter it, but it's actually the door into growth. This is the time I can find my faith and hang onto it. This is the time I need to learn to listen deeply to my innervoice. It is a necessity for transformation. Waiting in the darkness, in my lostness is vital for my growth. Waiting has the feel of being passive, but there is actually much growth going on internally. If I'm not prepared to wait, I may miss the clues when they come.

When I'm experiencing inner growth, something in me yearns for instant finding instead of gradual unfolding. I want to find the way and want it now. But instant discovery is rarely the way of deep growth. It takes time for a seed to sprout, a leaf to unfurl, a bud to bloom. All my worry and efforts at anxious control will not speed my inner growth.

Instead, I should recognize the pilgrim in me, that part of me which stumbles in confusion and wanders in the grey mist of unknowing. It is a time to grow in trust, believing that the stars will shine in the darkness of my soul, and lead me and guide me into the light.

Oh Lord,

From untruth, lead me to truth

From darkness, lead me to light

From death, lead me to immortality
