Devotional fervour marks Baba’s birthday

Istanantapur: The 83rd birthday of Sri Satya Saibaba was celebrated with devotional fervour at Puttaparthi Sunday. Saibaba gave a darshan to his devotees at Sai Kulwant Hall in Prashanti Nilayam at 10 am. On his arrival at Sai Kulwant Hall in a wheelchair, Saibaba was given a traditional welcome amidst chanting of Vedic hymns. Thousands of devotees worshipped Saibaba. After taking part in Bhajan by his devotees for one hour, Saibaba returned to his Mandir. No message was given to Saibaba’s devotees this time. Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur, State ministers J Geetha Reddy and Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy, Maharashtra minister Ashok Chavan, Anantapur Range DIG BL Sujatha Rao, District Collector V Anil Kumar, SP MK Singh, Congress leader Kanumuri Bapiraju and several other dignitaries took part in the birthday celebrations.

Later, cultural programmes were presented. Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar presented the bat he played in the world cup in 1983 to Saibaba.

Devotees started standing in the queues at Sai Kulwant Hall since 2 am. A large number of devotees from foreign countries also took part in the celebrations. Elaborate security arrangements were made in the town to thwart any untoward incident during the birthday fete. Devotees who did not get the darshan of Saibaba, returned home with disappointment.
